FUE mega sessions

So I'm scheduled to have a 3,500 FUE session done.

Why is it some doctors are able to do a large FUE session like that, while others can only do 2,000 FUE maximum??

Does it come down to individual technique and skill, or is it something else??

Can’t give a solid answer as there’s many possibilities. Some doctors use a manual punch so it’s more time consuming. Others use motorized so it’s quicker. Some doctors are of the mindset that they need to limit the number of grafts taken in one session to not stress out the donor. Others think it does not matter. Some doctors use time consuming stick and place. Others use pre made slits. Too many possibilities

Does a motorized  punch give a higher transection rate??

It takes time to carefully extract grafts by FUE and do it in a way that so that the extractions are fairly evenly distributed throughout the donor area. In my opinion, the removal of 3,500 grafts in one day is risky and should not be done.
