8 Months and Still Numb?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

So its been 8 months now and a part of my scalp is still numb. The area just above my scar where the doctor injected the numbing medication is numb! It has only gotten a little better since post-op...

Anyone else experience this? Any concerns?

I've heard of cases where some numbness remains. It can take time for the nerves which are severed by surgery to settle down. It doesn't normally take this long, but it can happen. This is based on my experience of speaking to many people from a wide array of doctors. The numbing injections have nothing to do with this. They wore off long ago.

The severed nerves will heal and grow and this takes time. It is a gradual process of regaining the feeling back and it can potentially take up to 12 months and possibly a tad bit longer.

As others have mentioned nerve endings can take from 12-18 months to fully heal be patient it will get better.

Most individuals feel improvement in 6 months following the procedure.

I had a strange tingling/numbing sensation in my donor area for the first month or so. Like the others said, it's just something you have to ride out - although I can't imagine having to deal with that for 8 months. The incisions aren't made deep enough to cause permanent damage, but the nerve irritation can last a while.

If you haven't already, I would definitely keep your surgeon in the loop on what's going on so that they can document it and help monitor it for you.

Lastly, if this is impacting your sleep (which is when mine was the most troublesome), I put an ice pack on my donor area to help keep the tingling sensations down.
