Embarrassment at the Pharmacy Counter

First of all, I'm new to the forum. You guys are great!

I have been seeing a skin specialist for the past few years who prescribes me Propecia for 12 months at a time. He actually prescribes 90 pills x 4.

The problem I have is at the pharmacy. There is always a young new girl working the counter and every single time, they question the transaction amount, explain that my insurance didn't cover it, ask for a new insurance card, etc. I have to deal with it each and every time. Usually there is a long line of customers behind me and the girl is looking at me like I'm crazy for proceeding with what she believes is an over-priced transaction that my insurance does not cover.

I'm okay with the price and of course its not covered by insurance. I want to switch to an online pharmacy, but have just started my research in finding one that is reliable.

Has anyone else had such embarrassing moments at the pharmacy counter? Am I over-reacting or shouldn't these girls be a little more professional and just tell me a price and swipe my card?

I feel the same. I was happy that I got a doctor's permission to get propecia and all I had to to do was take it to Giant Pharmacy, a walking distance. I went there and saw a girl my age and got scared, so I went to another store and got a lady that was not gonna get me scared or nervous. The doctor wrote me a prescription for 3 months and she told me that I should try 1 month cause it's very expensive. I got nervous cause the line was starting to fill up,so I said ok. Insurance don't cover propecia, she said out loud. I hurried and threw her the card and I said here take it. I paid $85, not knowing til I got in my car cause the lady piss me off yesterday. Damn!!

I had to laugh when I read this because the same thing happened to me. I dropped off my prescription and left the store and didn't realize they were trying to page me. I go back 20 minutes later to pick it up and the obligatory "hot girl" behind the counter explains to me that my insurance won't cover it and she decided not to fill it when I didn't answer the page. My script was for 90 pills at $60.00. It told her that was ok and I didn't expect the insurance to pay for it and I was happy to pay. Now the beastly, female pharmacist chimes in and goes, "are you going to be splitting these?" and it's obvious that she knows why I want them and doesn't seem to be happy about it. She then asks me if I understand "what my doctor is trying to do." All in all, a very uncomfortable experience but, hey, I got a year's worth of pills so I don't have to do it again for a while.

I got 30 pills for $85, thats cheap!!!! Its funny, but still sucks having to go public with it. I just wish you can get it when you go to your doctor.

I just found my receipt. The exact amount I paid was $64.69 for 90 pills of generic Fin 5mg. I guess I did pretty good for not comparison shopping.

i got 1mg propecia and you got 5mg. Did you have to ask for a high dosage?

Like a lot of guys here, I split the 5mg pill into fourths because it saves tons of money. You can find lots of discussions about that using the search feature but the bottom line is that it's virtually impossible to get an even split and you end up with about 1.25mg rather than Propecia's 1mg dose. In order to counter this, some people lay off one day a week. Your doctor has to prescribe it for you that way. When my doc suggested I take Propecia, I just asked him if he minded prescribing Proscar so I could split it and he agreed. I got the generic and it was a bargain.

Yep. I think I'm well above average in my understanding of health, hair loss, etc. so I get frustrated with clerks at pharmacies, and even some doctors who don't know as much about it as I do.

Just try to make it uncomfortable for them too. icon_cool.gif

Call me ol' fashioned, but I agree 110% that buying condoms is 110% more embarassing. I seriously can't do it at an actual store...kills me, and in the past I've gone through great pains to ensure that the transaction goes down in the most covert, secretive manner possible.

My most embarassing pharmacy experience was w/ propecia, though. This insolent girl behind the counter who I've long disliked had this incredibly loud Long Island accent, and when I asked for my fin she blurted out, much within the earshot of the people right behind me, "why would you want *propecia*, you aren't *bald* are you?".....damn fool. icon_smile.gif

Keep in mind...the hot chick at the counter just may be wearing hair... icon_biggrin.gif

DISCLOSURE: I teach people how to order, wear and maintain non-biological hair AND an hourly rate applies! :)

I do NOT represent any hair company, I do NOT sell any products and my only clients are the people who need my services.

The type of coaching that I offer - personal phone calls, web-casts, video/picture sharing, email - all in a private environment - is what I am passionate about. I feel strongly that there are people who want to learn in a safe, private exchange by communicating with someone who ACTUALLY wears hair.

My desire is to help others learn how to wear hair confidently and quickly for a fair, affordable price.
