Hi all,

Was reviewing the post op pictures of patients and noticed that the scalp is stapled together. Does this hurt terribly? Will it leave a noticeable scar behind if someone has thinning hair at the back and the sides?

Thank you.

If you have thinning hair on the back or sides (i.e. the donor area), then you are probably not a candidate for hair transplantation. The staples and/or sutures are uncomfortable - sometimes impossible to sleep with them in. But they are only in for about 10 days. There will be a scar but if the hair is kept long enough no one will notice it.

Hello, it depends how thin your hair is & if you're suitable. I don't have thick donor, I'm 4 months out of a strip operation & have my hair grown to a number 3 on the sides above my ears but no one can see a scar, I certainly can't.

The scar people fear isn't what you imagine it to be if you go to an elite surgeon. Mine is 32cm long but you can't see it!

It was very uncomfortable trying to sleep with staples in my head, they're kept in for 14 days. Stitches can come out after 7-10 days I think. You can stay there & I did, but it was very boring!! But I wanted one of the techs to remove the staples.

Nothing to fear.

I had staples.......they are uncomfortable, but no more sp than sutures. I had a great scar result with the staples. It is really just Dr. preference. I don't think one is better than the other......the top surgeons get great scar results using both..

Surgery - Dr. Ron Shapiro FUT 6/14/11 - 3048 grafts

Surgery - Dr. Ron Shapiro FUE 1/28/13 & 1/29/13 - 1513 grafts
