The Truth about Finesteride

I have had my HT a bit over 30 days and have not take any finesteride or applied any rogaine, nor have I ever done done so in my life.

The reason is that I do not take a lifetime comittment lightly and am having a bit of analysis paralysis regarding this matter.

I am looking for the straight up truth about finesteride and some wisdom to help me decide what to do from here.

Like any drug you can experience side effects - but chances are you won't. It has worked well for me. I wish I started on it sooner.

Hi, i started on the meds 18 months before i had my Ht. I'm starting to see the full effects of being on the meds now and have had some regrowth as well as retaining what hair i already have. For me it was an easy decision to make, all my family are Norwood 6/7.I didnt see the point in having a HT if it didnt retain what i had because i would of carried on through to a Norwood 6/7 and would of continually had to chase my hair loss with more HT's.

I think alot of it is down to how much hair you have and what yr family history is like for hair loss. If you have a family history of severe hair loss and you definatley want a HT then i strongly believe you have to at least try the meds to see if it helps in yr fight against stopping or reversing your hair loss.

Just my humble opinion.

I was told that it might not be a good idea to start finesteride immediately after a HT due to the possibility of causing the hair to rest longer thus increasing the time for the hair to start growing.

Have you heard of this? Is it true?

Should I hold off for a while or maybe try to get away without using it at all?

OneHair,

In my opinion, the decision to begin any medication regimen breaks down to two factors: one, the benefits of taking the drug; two, the potential side effects associated with the medication.

Frankly, the benefits of continual finasteride/Propecia usage are well documented (and impressive), and the most recent objective data reveals reversible sexual side effects occurring at a rate somewhere between 0.7-3% of patients.

With these facts, you should be able to weigh the severity of the side effects and the potential benefits and come to an informed decision. In my experience, it seems like most hair loss sufferers on our discussion boards believe the benefits greatly outweigh the potential "cons."

Good luck!

I have been taking Finasteride for over 10 years without any side effects. There are risks in everything: diet, lack of exercise, drinking alcohol and diet sodas.

The challenge lies in attempting to stabilize hair loss so you can move forward consistently. I do not advocate "drugs" but it comes down to risk vs reward in my mind
