Senior Member Mercury Posted June 8, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 8, 2011 I keep reading on the forums about some patients who have great density and others who have poor density. Clearly someone who has great density in the back of their scalp will have more hair to transplant; the opoosite is also true - the less hair they have, less to transplant. I'm doing quite a bit of research on this and I have some books coming my way but I thought this would be answered well here: Is there a definition of density and how many hairs constitutes someone with great density in the back of their head, and what constitutes someone with poor density. Please help me understand  Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealth you represents determinism; the way you play it is free will. Senior Member mattj Posted June 8, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 8, 2011 The average number of follicular units for a Caucasian is around 90-120 per square centimetre. That's follicular units, not hairs. Average number of hairs per unit would be around 2.3. Knowing that, I still can't really say what I would consider "great density" to be. It's open to interpretation. I am a patient and representative of Dr Rahal. Senior Member NEWHAIRPLEASE Posted June 8, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 8, 2011 Matt If that's the average, would it be fairly safe to say that anything above 105 follicular units per square centimeter would be considered above average? Senior Member Cant decide Posted June 9, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 9, 2011 I have heard anything above 90 is above average. Also, 2.3 hairs/graft is the "Published" average but in reality, it seems that 2.0 is more like the average. Look at the breakdowns on this site and you will find that most people fall around 2.0. Senior Member mattj Posted June 9, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 9, 2011 The data does vary. I think 105 units per square cm would be considered good density. Senior Member MusoInOz Posted June 11, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 11, 2011 Over 100 is good density for sure, as Matt said it is all boiled down to interpretation. You could have strong density yet finer hair which can often still appear thin so to speak. I have thick hair shafts however not tightly placed throughout my scalp, so if I were to have higher density with my hair shafts I would be laughing *Ha,ha,ha* :-) Cheers, "The road to success is always under construction" I represent Dr Rahal and the associated clinic as a paid patient advisor.
