Regular Member Relaxo Posted June 19, 2008 Regular Member Share Posted June 19, 2008 So I'm 5 months post-op and am ecstatic with my hair growth and the compliments I'm receiving. I have a new salt-water pool and have been outside in the sun swimming/tanning. Will this cause me to lose/damage my new hair? Bill - Seemiller
Relaxo, It's typically best to wait 6 months until exposing your scalp to the sun for long period of time without sunblock. However, it is always best practice to use protection from the sun on your entire body and scalp, hair transplant or not. See "The Importance of Protecting Your Balding Scalp from the Sun" by Dr. Lindsey. Best wishes, Bill
Senior Member FacelessMan Posted June 21, 2008 Senior Member Share Posted June 21, 2008 I'd second Bill' statement, and add, I have a personal bias against tanning at all, after what turned out to be a minor skin cancer removal several months ago... That said, yes, Dr. Feller as I recall also said that the absolutely-no-sun restriction was only for the first few months. And, the "salt water" pool is really no different than any other pool - in that it is generating chlorine through a system that uses salt for that purpose. I'm not a chemist, but I have the same pool myself. Plus, I was once a consultant in a food plant where sodium hypochlorite was introduced to replace the chlorine. Since it did the same thing and regitered as chlorine, I figure the "salt" is made into the sodium hypochlorite so it's no longer salt at that point. A lot of people think it's like swimming in the ocean when asking me about my pool. Although it feels a little different, I would think it better for the hair than the other. 100?
