How are these donor characteristics

I went for a consult with Dr. Cole in Atlanta and he said:

NW 3V, brown hair, fair skin, average hair shaft thickness, straight hair. (my hair was short when I went, I can tell you when it's a bit longer it has a slight wave to it.

170 cm2 donor, 85 follicular units

Any suggestions? What's all this mean?

Is there any way to tell the total number of grafts/hairs available to transplant from this information? (i.e. 7,000 grafts, 16,000 hairs, etc...)

Based on the info you provided...the math is simple...

You have 170 sq cm of donor hair with 85 follicular units per sq cm.

1 graft = 1 follicular unit.

So you have 14450 grafts.

Having said that...I don't think that this is the number of grafts that are transplantable. There are other factors like scalp laxity. How many grafts did he think you'd need?

He recommended 400 on either side of the forelock in front and 800 in the crown.

Unless I misunderstood him, he also said 180 cm2 was average, I thought I might actually be a little "light" in donor grafts. This is also why he only recommended 800 in the crown...to budget for future loss in the front, recommending never going over 1500 in the crown to budget hair.

Here is a link with pics of my loss. I'm maybe a "hair" thinner (lol) since February. I started propecia this month. I am hoping since some of my hair loss is recent it will really help. On a bright note, I've had absolutely no sides.

These pics are wet hair, worst possible light.

I know all that gets a little confusing. The first dr. I consulted with gave me a 70% on donor area, so I didn't know what the hell to make of that.

I really appreciated Cooley's straight talk on it; as he said I could get about 6,000 grafts from my donor.

I had a previous procedure so I don't know how much that affected my donor area, but it was good to know I have about 3,000 more for later if needed.

Yeah, I'd really love to know how I can figure out a concrete number of transplantable grafts from this information.

Rick,

It has been argued how much can be taken before you get the moth eaten look - assuming you are doing FUE with Cole.

The answer will vary depending on hair characteristics - somewhere between 25-40%

Truth be told, I am probably going to do a strip surgery as I think the yield is better than with a FUE sometime in the future to obtain grafts not harvestable by strip.

Dr. Cole was the first doc I've seen.

If you're in Atlanta, you should go up the road to Charlotte. Dr. Cooley will give you a count.
