Regular Member NickD Posted October 4, 2007 Regular Member Share Posted October 4, 2007 Hi everyone, my wife sometimes watches Oprah, and I'm sure we all know of Dr. Mehmet Oz, who appears on the show occasionally to dispense health advice. She was telling me that on an appearance on Oprah recently, Dr. Oz gave the impression that he was cool to the idea of hair transplants. Apparently he told the audience that drugs like Propecia or Minoxidil were better. I didn't see this broadcast so I don't know first-hand. I have seen Dr. Oz before, and, he has quite a full mop of hair on his head! Easy for someone like that to pooh-pooh hair transplants! Did anyone else see this? Comments? Or, was I misinformed? Bill - Seemiller
Nick, I can't say that I saw this broadcast - but... Very rarely are there cut and dry answers when it comes to hair restoration. Therefore, the answer to this question is that it depends. Propecia (Finasteride) and/or Rogaine (minoxodil) have a much higher chance of reversing the hair miniaturization process thus regrowing hair when a person hasn't experienced a great amount of hair loss. For the majority of hair loss sufferers considering hair transplantation, hair loss medication should be tried first at the very least to maintain existing natural hair. Hair transplantation is typically not a viable option for younger patients who have only just started to experience hair loss. In fact, any hair transplant doctor that performs hair transplant surgery on a younger patient with minimal hair loss may be exposing the hair transplant patient to expedited hair loss if hair is being transplanted between a lot of natural hair. But for those hair loss sufferers who have greater balding patterns, Propecia and Rogaine combined cannot do what hair transplantation can do. Senior Member Jotronic Posted October 8, 2007 Senior Member Share Posted October 8, 2007 I don't think Dr. Oz is actually against hair transplants. Before I go on, I do not watch Oprah but people on her show get a lot of attention and Dr. Oz has a show on XM radio as well. He's quite popular. As I understand it he advocates medications first before the surgical option. You can listen to him on Oprah's website where they have archived XM radio shows. http://www2.oprah.com/xm/moz/200708/moz_20070810.jhtml The Truth is in The Results Dr. Victor Hasson and Dr. Jerry Wong are members of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians
Regular Member HTinthefuture Posted October 15, 2007 Regular Member Share Posted October 15, 2007 probably because he is not a ht surgeon, nor is he remotely going bald. he is a MD and they make $$$ off of drugs. like another said, who cares what he or the blob-rah says. do it if you want to, and dont regret it.
