Consultation with Dr. Rose

Hi all. I just got back from a consultation with Dr. Rose this morning, and wanted to share my experience on the boards for anyone who might be interested.

I walked in, got some forms to fill out, and a photocopied article by Dr. Rose from a copy of the 1998 Journal of Cosmetic Surgery outlining how to create a natural hairline.

When I was called back, I got a chance to chat with his lead tech, Laura, for a bit, and then met Dr. Rose. Dr. Rose was very friendly and accommodating. I actually found out something I didn't know about him (and asked his permission to share before I posted it on the boards). Dr. Rose received a Hair Transplant about 10 years ago from Dr. Shapiro! This may sound silly, but for all the research and all the posts I've made, I have never actually sat down one on one with someone who actually had the procedure done. Several have been kind enough to offer and I'll be contacting them soon (wanthairs, Bill... thank you both!), but Dr. Rose was the first one I had ever actually seen.

He told me the scar was not that great because it had been done so long ago, and let me see it. I'd say from my quick glance that it was about 1/16th of an inch wide (again, just my brief guesstimation).

Beyond that though, I couldn't tell at all.

We talked a little bit about Propecia, and he was kind enough to write me a prescription for Proscar. Didn't even charge me! =)

We also chatted a little bit about the laser comb... he feels it's a bit of a sham from what I gathered (which is pretty in-line with most of us on the boards). Then we talked about his time with SMG, and what he's doing now in Florida. He now works with the Academic Alliance in Dermatology on Webb road. I asked him how many procedures hes done, and he said "thousands". I told him how active I am on the boards here (he was impressed that I knew exactly how many fu's/sqcm I wanted and where... lol) and how a lot of us would really like to see more of his work.

We chatted a bit about some of the other Doc's. He had good things to say about almost all of them. He mentioned that he felt H&W were a little too aggressive for his taste, and he felt that this increased the risk for stretch back of the donor area. He said he thought they did great work though, and had helped a lot of people.

His assistant, Laura, showed me some photos of 2 of his previous patients, and a few of his LEDGE closures. I had never seen these photos online, and she said that they were recent patients.

The photos on the wall of the office were one of the same 4 I saw on his website and this one. She promised to send me some more photos though, so I'll be looking forward to those.

Laura also told me something that kind of surprised me. When I asked how many techs Dr. Rose had and their level of experience, she told me that all their techs had 10+ years of experience and that their techs were subcontractors. She said that this was standard in the HT industry, and their lifestyle was to fly around a lot to preform procedures with different doctors. Does this sound right to everyone?

Dr. Rose asked me what I did, and I told him I was a web designer. He smiled and told me that one of the patients in the clinic was a 2 year old girl with cancer, who's mom was a single mother and could not afford some of the stuff she needed. He asked if I'd be willing to help with a website for the fund raiser. Well, of course I said yes. He smiled and offered to give me a discount. lol

Dr. Rose drew a hairline that was more conservative than I would have hoped, and told me that he would shoot for 2500-3000 grafts (H&W gave me an estimate of 4000 in my online consult). He checked my donor density and I had about 75fu/sqcm, which he felt was average. He said that if he took a strip 1.3cm x 28cm, we could probably get what we needed. We both agreed to focus mainly on the front and not bother with the crown at this point.

His assistant Laura gave me 4 names and numbers of his previous patients that I'll be contacting... 3 men and 1 woman. She also said that she would arrange for me to view a live surgery or 2, and would try to get me back in to meet other patients who were coming in for follow-ups.

All in all, it was a good experience. I'd love to know what some of the vets think, as this was my first consult with a HT Doc NOT online.

I have an in-person consult scheduled with Dr. Hasson Oct 1st, and one with Dr. Epstein Oct 19th.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Glad to hear it EMU,

I am 9 days post op with Dr. Ron Shapiro and I over heard Matt talking a bout Dr. Rose leaving. He said it was purely a professional move for himself. Matt said he is a great doc and really knows his stuff. I hope my scar will turn out un noticeable with the new tricho technique. Thats great you have done, and are still doing research. Good for you.

Sounds to me like an excellent experience and it should be a blue print for how this type of consult should always be done! From what I've read, Dr. Rose is cream of the crop as far as skills go and with this, it sounds like his over all practices are right in line with that. No hiding behind reputation; sounds like he and his staff put forth effort to supply you with as many resources as they could. I'm impressed. Also, I've read before where some clinics with more than one surgical office use "traveling tech subcontractors" so it doesn't seem out of the ordinary. As long as their skills are verified and approved by the doctor.

Emu,

After sitting in his chair twice in the last two months. I would say you cant go wrong with him. Both the DR and Laura are top notch people.

You can tell he is meticulous about his work and it shows it.

Good luck

PJ

I wouldn't go so far as to say this is standard in the industry as a whole but then again I am not very familiar with the hiring practices of other clinics. We have several techs out of our 24 total that have ten years of experience and even higher. All of those years have been with us and not other clinics.

Thank you for the postive review. I do need to clarify a few things.

1. I am skeptical about the long term results with low level light lasers. I would not say it is a sham. As I mentioned to you low level light lasers have been used in wound healing with positive benefits. I don't think there is enough data avaliable to assess the efficacy of the various lasers out there.I am preparing a research project with the Univ of South Florida to look at the aspect of apoptosis and these lasers.

Also to clarify something else:

Laura sent me this letter in regards to the subcontractors:

Hi Steve,

In response to your letter that I saw, I want to clarify one thing. Yes, some of the techs. Are subcontractors, but the same staff is in place for every one of our surgeries. It's not like we have different techs for every surgery, and different quality of work is done for each patient. We have a set group that we've established, that we've picked ourselves, and each patient has the same techs and the same quality. Hope you have a better understanding. Laura

Just wanted to share this with everyone. I am still learning stuff about this procedure, and I can't thank Dr. Rose and Laura enough for being so great about providing me the info I need to make an educated decision.

Just to add on to Laura's point, Dr. Rose has the same staff working on all his cases. These individuals are not simply trained to do hair transplants - they are trained specially in the techniques that Dr. Rose has developed and employs. Laura is the lead assistant and has worked with Dr. Rose for many years. Terri, another assistant, has worked for Dr. Rose since 1991. All the other techs, while they have worked with some of the most prominent transplants docs, primarily work for Dr. Rose.

Hair restoration is a team sport, so you need a great team as well as a great doctor. Dr. Rose absolutely recognizes this and works with a top staff. Patients can rest assured that they are in very safe hands with the crew.

Notice: I am an employee of Dr. Paul Rose who is recommended on this community. I am not a doctor. My opinions are not necessarily those of Dr. Rose. My advice is not medical advice.
