Hi All, The last time I posted on this subject the pictures I attached were poor quality. These ones I hope are a bit better. I have taken the pictures in average/normal lighting and in my bathroom with a bright light right above my head. Since the last time I posted I met with one HT doctor who told me initially I would do with around 2500 grafts. Seeing as its not evident where my baldness will go - also given I am not keen on using propecia or minox - basically the HT will be the only way I will go. That said, to help others give a more accurate response (if possible), I'll list some details about my hair loss and hair loss in general in my family - I say this because I want to start off with the right number of grafts (rather than waste what I could have used later on). The characteristics of my hair? Well I am told the quality is good, not great - I have thin black hair, which contrasts with the colour of my scalp. I started losing hair at the age of 19, I am now 32. My father 'has' started balding but he is now 62 - his balding started this year - from the crown, most of my loss is from the front - this is the area I am planning on targeting. Other than that my grandad from my mums side would have been a norwood 6? the Julius Caesar type look - but he was like that into his 90's. Also if this helps from my mums side her brothers all ended up with thin hair - none have lost all their hair and they are into their 60's - they have very high hair lines though. If pictures of me holding my hair back helps let me know and i'll post those. I apologize for some of the angles - i know they might seem awkward

Do you say this because you are unhappy with the results you got? With respect to the scars, I thought over time they heal and well they probably do not totally disappear - but they should be hidden by your hair no?

Hi, I thought if you dont shave the recipient area - and assuming one has some hair, the transplanted hairs would not be noticeable. Basically you native hair would conceal any signs on a transplant, no? Aren't the transplanted hairs essentially stubble length? So if your native hair is longer than that, it would more or less be undetectable - unless of course you've lowered the hair line or done work on the temples? cheers

Yeah I kind of figured it would not be possible. It would be great, though, to know - it would really help in planning a HT.

People with mpb continue to have this for the rest of their life don't they? So how long do you wait before you determine what your hair loss will be? - eventually wont all mbp'ers end up being nw7?

Thanks guys, I'm more concerned about the redness and the scabs - which i guess is what makes it evident that you've had something done. So I guess I'' have to take two weeks off at least - crap I only have 2 left this year too.

Thanks for the info - I will now have to look over the hair loss blogs again and pay more attention to things like the number of grafts , and the current balding of an individual - something I was not really not looking at before. . That said, when I went to one clinic - they told me they would not be concentrating too much on my existing hair line - rather they would focus a bit above it - bearing in mind I would be losing hair in the future - I am ok with this, seeing as my hair line is not too high to begin with - I also don't think i'm interested in lowering it. I have a pretty young looking face as it is, keeping a more mature hair line would seem the way to go.

When you say narrow it down to a few surgeons - is that just to see if theres any difference of opinion or to get multiple sessions from multiple surgeons - well - i guess you meant the first part?..

The level I'm not so sure how to explain. But I went to a ht clinic and they said they wouldn't be doing anything to my hair line. There will be some little work done on the temples and the rest would be to fill up the front - try and give it more density. Also if i were to keep my hair long, and shampoo it - wind easily exposes my scalp - due to the lack of density, or well hair. However if it hasn't been shampooed it doesn't show up as much. Its enough I suppose for people to say I'm losing my hair. Also if its wet and I comb my hair straight back - you would see the front portion of my scalp. I hope thats kind of clear..

Ok, the number of grafts in a first session (barring how bald I am) depends on the quality of my donor area and the mobility of my scalp (correct?) With that said, if I have a first session of about 2500, would it be possible to have 2 more sessions of 2500 each? For a total of 7500 grafts? Now if I assume in a worst case scenario that I have 2 hairs per graft, that would be a total of 2x7500 = 15,000. Based on that the second part of my question would be - assuming for the most part my transplant(s) focuses on the front, vertex and a bit of the crown - what if i were to lose all my native hair in those areas and the only surviving hairs are the transplanted ones. That would mean I'd have about 15,000 hairs covering that area - what would that end up looking like? Would I be right back where I started - prior to the trasnplant? Or am I looking at this all wrong?

Hi, Simply put, when its windy - my hair being thin from the front results in my scalp being shown. Would I be able to get enough density to prevent this from happening. I've read the faq section on hair density - the illusion of hair density - How does that factor in on a windy day?

thanks all - i'd assume taking 2 weeks off should be a safe bet for the redness and scabs to no longer be visible.

Tembo - you have almost the same stats as I do. I've found that jogging with some light weight training has helped in me losing the roundness. That and doing he scalp exercises created by Tom Hagerty have given me a stronger, more pronounced looking jaw line.

I do agree with what you all say. My concern is that my donor area was diagnosed as good as opposed to excellent. I'm not sure what that means ,really, in the hair transplant world. To me it just means I am not in the top percentile for having the best results. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to make it sound like a competition. I just want to strengthen my existing hairline and get some density, so that when the wind blows my hair doesn't look like it will get carried away with it. Would being diagnosed as having good donor hair (as opposed to excellent) allow me to achieve that *shrugs*...

1% thats depressing....not having excellent hair is even worse...you can't even win with a transplant....i guess thats the reality of it, though.

Thanks for the replies. . No I am not currently doing anything to manage my hair loss. The most I do are scalp exercises. That said, I went down to a local hair transplant clinic today. My hair was examined to see if I was a suitable candidate for a hair transplant. What I was told was the quality of my hair is good - not excellent, just good - that had me pretty bummed out. Dr Carman, I'm not so sure my hair is coarse - i thought coarse hair would be bad? i.e inferior quality - my hair is thin, so i assume it to therefore be coarse. But then large caliber per shaft, sounds like good quality hair (i suppose I am confused, among other things). I asked the doctor to give me an example of excellent hair compared to my good hair quality, and he showed me one patient and said, his one hair is equal to about 2 of yours. That sucks.

by the way if i've understood you correctly...Are you saying some of us are prone to ending up as a n6 or n7...whereas some of us will eventually stabilize and never reach that level of baldness - provided we use something to prevent further loss or not for that matter?
