  1. At least you are repairable. I would not blame Doganay for your hairline placement, it is ultimately the responsibility of the patient on the hairline design. If you both decided on the placement and it is where you had both pre-determined it should be, that decision ultimately is yours, and if unhappy, you are to blame, not Doganay. To say after the fact that you have miniaturization and can't take meds is something, in my opinion, you are responsible for.

I don't have a dog in this fight, I'm simply an unbiased observer. I think your only complaint is that Doganay was not present enough (a common theme amongst most Turkish clinics) and poor growth. And perhaps your growth will take off, only time will tell.

Agree completely. Furthermore it's still way too early to judge the final result of this hair transplant.

I had a HT with Dr. Hakan Doganay too January this year. Very happy with my results. Which technician did your extractions paleocapa89? I'm curious.

  2. Saw this on another forum. What do you guys think of this? Does it hold some truth, or not at all?

Hi everyone. I came across this post on balding blog which is written mainly by the FUE pioneer Dr William Rassman MD. It was put up only a few days ago. I have quoted it below.

I am writing this post from the ISHRS annual meeting in Chicago. I have just heard a wonderful and informative discussion on the use of of the drug finasteride. As we know, the hormone DHT is 40 times as powerful an androgen as testosterone. The treatment of genetic hair loss is to address block the DHT hormone. One of the worlds experts, Dr. Mohit Khera from the Baylor College of Medicine, told me privately that when DHT levels are in the low normal range, the use of DHT blockers such as finasteride will have little value and may not be effective in the treatment of genetic hair loss. With this as a suggestion, we will now optionaly offer DHT blood tests for any person who wishes to have this test prior to going on finasteride (Propecia). If the blood levels are low, we may not advise the use of this drug as the goal of using this drug is to drop DHT levels, which may already be low. This lecture is based on considerable research both in animals and human studies but it is not absolutely definitive as there was much controversy at the meeting that the doctor may have had a conflict of interest in the opinions he drew.

  3. That's what I noticed about FUE cases, there is a lot of talk about them but not a lot of results out there. So many doctors are given the credit for being great FUE doctors but they still do FUT and they have few of their own FUE results to share. Then you read that people say FUE is as good as FUT is but look at the difference in the number of results posted. Its huge. I really feel for the FUE guys because they are told they will grow as well as the FUT guys but when they don't they are just told they need a "touch up". More money, more surgery. Better just to get the strip and be done with it. Then you know there is still more donor area left. I hope everything works out for you and you get your hair back one way or the other.

Jup, what a load of bollocks.

  4. Hey Swoop,

It's my understanding that he does FUE on lower NW patients and prefers it on guys younger than 30. For the others, he may utilize FUT. As far as the numbers go, take a look at his HTN Coalition profile. This is automatically updated with results posted in the "Leading Clinics" section. In this section, he has 91 results displayed. 39 of them are FUE. This gives a ratio of 43% FUE and 57% FUT.

Just rough numbers and doesn't say much about a trend, but I think it's probably the norm for those who can offer both; pretty much split because of the indications for both.

And yes, his FUE protocol is quite refined. I believe he's used the same technicians for extractions for quite some time now, and it's clear he's dedicated to it.

PS: Your results are looking great! Glad you're keeping us updated!

Ahh ok , that explains it thanks :). Thanks again and no problem.

  5.

Dr Bisanga does about 50% of his cases FUT (and his work is meticulous)

    Dr Devroye

Dr Feriduni does about 50% FUT as well (especially in higher NW cases and guys older than 30)

Blake just a bit off topic but where do you pull these numbers from? Just recently I read from someone else that Feriduni almost completely performs FUE, with FUT being a minority. The guy is so extremely occupied because of his FUE work primarily lol. The whole online community fancies him as the god of FUE pretty much. You can PM me how you got these numbers, thanks.

  6. Looks excellent, Swooping. You must be elated with that result :). What made you decide FUE over FUT? How do you feel about your donor now that it's been 8+ months--any density concerns after having ~3K extracted?

Thanks Windjammer, I sure am :). I find FUE overall superior to FUT. It's less invasive, has less downtime, no linear scar. I don't see how I would benefit from having a FUT when I have the option to go for a FUE.

My donor is fine. I have no density concerns but it has taken a hit for sure though. If I'll ever have a subsequent procedure I'll need to leave the most areas alone where extractions have taken place.

Looking real sharp! I think your hair characteristics and color compliment your skin tone. What product(s) do you use to style it?

Thanks NoTakeBacks, I use "parucci funky styler". It's a strong matte wax.

Looks great swoop, how do you rate Dr. Doganay? Still up in the air about who to go to next.

"What I find interesting is not the hairline design but the hairline direction. I've seen few cases where the natural flow of directional transitions is properly recreated but it appears that Dr. Doganay has done just that. Well done by the doctor and congratulations to you."

This is a comment from a guy on my 2 week post op pictures who has been in this industry for many years and has stand for years besides Hasson & Wong and also worked for Rahal. I think that says a lot.

This brings me to my next point. On a artistic level I feel he is incredible. Personally I find that he has an awesome touch of recreating a natural appearance of the hair. That is based on the online results that I have seen.

He came over to me as a confident ethical down to earth guy who doesn't care that much about money. A while ago when I e-mailed them about the lack of growth of one side they said that I should wait and if I was still unhappy at the 1 year mark that I could come in for a small touch up for free.

I do think they should keep a sharp eye though in regards to some aspects. For instance I have told them in person I didn't like a particular case of them where they had a long surgery day with a high graft count and so a high out of body time for the grafts. I mean they are busy I do understand that but quantity should not come over quality.

Technician involvement is important too but this accounts for every doctor that uses technicians, I want a skilled technician if he is going to be involved in my surgery. On that note I will add the name of the technician who did my extractions if I find out what his name is (forgot about that totally). It should be overall more clear in my opinion which technician(s) are involved if results are posted.

That said I personally find him to be 1st tier for FUE worldwide pretty much and at the top of Turkey with Erdogan.

  7. Thought I would post some pictures. Quite great and funny how things can go in a few months as you can see! I'll be heading to 8 months post-op soon. The next and last update will be at 12 months and will be more detailed with harsh close up shots.

I thank Dr. Doganay and his staff again for the excellence.

If only I had hair thicker than 50 micron though! The hair greed lol :D.

(bottom picture of the 5 pics is with hair brushed back)

  8. Bernstein and Harris probably both around normal/mediocre level.

Feller is good at FUT, not good at FUE.

H&W absolute elite at FUT. The best of the best. I think almost everyone will concur with this one.

Don't know about the Shapiro you mention.

So for FUT the choice for me would be simple, H&W. For FUE I would broaden my options. The FUE elite is centered in Europe primarily.

    Good luck.

  9. " Is it worth going just to get my donor area looked at? Would they be able to guess how much more I'm destined to lose?

No nobody will be able to tell you that.

However, I am strongly considering going overseas for FUE one of these years.

That's a very good game plan. Your hair is still very great at this moment. If I were you I would still wait like 1-3 years. Just chill out a few months, your hairline will probably regress more considering you can't go on finasteride and then fill the space up with a lovely FUE from a elite surgeon!

  10. Thank you, also good perspective.

I don't wear my hair short, but do care about a scar, but not nearly as much as I care about quality of outcome. It sounds like, even within the debate, that at this stage, an expert FUE surgeon can produce long term results/benefit with FUE that can match FUT. The intangibles then take over once youve nailed the surgeon.

    I'll post pics now.

Well said. I concur. You don't want the linear scar too as many people don't (who does? lol), so it should be clear for you. Keep a sharp eye. Look for independent patient results too.

HTSoon makes some goods points by the way :)!

  11. Dr Feriduni's waiting list for a consultation is over a year, may not even get one now till 2017.

Can't compare Feriduni with Feller though. That is a class apart. In FUT not even to mention at FUE lol. He is indeed very popular though. Considered by the whole online community to be the elite. One year ago I informed about the waiting list and it was like 11+ months, quite insane.

  12. The most important thing is to ask yourself what YOU want. FUE is gaining tremendously in popularity and is overtaking FUT heavily now. Yield wise I think the difference is negligible. That is assuming you go with a top FUE practitioner.

We heard on this forum from a doctor that the ISHRS is performing a multi center study and is comparing the yield in FUT vs FUE. Preliminary results point to the survival rates being equal.

  13. Yes deterioration of donor hair certainly happens. Everyone will suffer from a general hair diameter decrease as one gets older, including in the donor area.

Furthermore the hair follicles taken from the donor zone, even from the so called "safe donor zone" may succumb to miniaturization due to androgenetic alopecia.

Also unrelated to androgenetic alopecia we have senescent alopecia which is typically characterized by diffuse hairloss all over the scalp and can hit as early as 40-50 years old. This also hits the donor hair.

So the "safe donor zone" is a big fallacy.

  14. Thanks for all the replies guys any information is helpful!

I've been looking for a specialist to speak to which has turned out to be surprisingly hard, I've found a doctor called Dr Ingrid Wilson who seems to be well qualified and is a member of the trichology institution which I've been told to look out for so I'm pretty confident her opinion can be trusted but how exactly would I know if she was trying to sell propecia to make a profit?

Also a lot of you are saying you wished you had started propecia earlier, did you experience any negative side effects?

Do much research. Asses the benefits vs the risks for yourself. Finasteride is a pretty damn serious medication. Doctors can be biased. Ultimately the decision is up to you.
