Greg_Swanson, We always take into account someone’s potential future loss. I was recently talking to a patient who had a procedure with another doctor and I was dismayed at the fact this patient indicted his previous surgeon did not talk to him about his projected future hair loss or possible prevention. With few exceptions and I could agree with no exceptions, every patient should have this conversation with his surgeon regardless of how far they are projected to slide down the Norwood scale. For a NW7 or potential NW7, a conservative hairline and approach is usually always the best option. The degree of dense packing necessary or required will vary from patient to patient. While a certain density is required in the frontal zone for the most natural result, it is not likely to be as high in a NW7 with avenge donor hair than in a NW3 with exceptional donor hair as an example. In most cases, the average surgeon can only achieve a certain density so in this instance there may not be much of a difference. In our clinic, the chances would be greater that there would be a discrepancy in density from the NW7 to the NW3.

Hi Bonkling, If this question is for me, considering I am a representative of Hasson and Wong, I will answer from my perspective. If you’re asking if there is a difference between Dr. Hasson and Dr. Wong, the simple answer is yes. However, there is not much difference in terms of skill level and how they would be ranked and perceived within the industry. Both are considered among the best in the world and as you have likely seen here, are capable of producing results equal to or greater than any other highly respected surgeon. The patient can choose which doctor they’d like if their research has led them to one over the other. In most cases, a patient is suited for either. If I feel for whatever reason one doctor may be a better fit than another, I will tell the patient so. As an example, Dr. Wong typically does more female patients than Dr. Hasson so a female may be assigned to Dr. Wong. CosmoKrammer, Both Dr. Hasson and Dr. Wong are proficient in both FUT and FUE. We have felt for a few years now that either doctor can produce our industry-leading results with either method. Harry_potter1, Each doctor has his own highly skilled team. In some cases when required, a member from one team will assist the other team but not often. It is interesting how things happen on the forums. One member may express an opinion and maybe it gains traction. I’ve heard these things for years about Dr. Wong is better with crowns, and Dr. Hasson is better with this or that, etc. I find it amusing as I know both are equally as talented in cases where one is considered better than the other. Maybe check back to our site. We’ve put more FUE results up and placed some more prominently in the first few pages. Presently 11 of 12 results are FUE on the front page of our Gallery, 4 of which are 3,000 grafts or more. We will also be adding another Dr. Hasson 4,000 + FUE result to the gallery and I’ll also post here very soon. 8 of the 11 are Dr. Hasson’s FUE results. Bonkling, We typically estimate or recommend a higher number of grafts than most clinics. We will usually put more in a given area and have the staff to perform large mega sessions. As I have stated before, you have to have a certain density for it to look natural and you need large numbers for large areas of thinning or balding scalp. Some clinics don’t have the technology or staff to accomplish the numbers in one session. We sometimes kid that no one comes back and says: “Doc, you gave me too much hair” If it was to happen, we would be leading the way in those cases. 😄 jj51702, Dr. Wong’s contributions have been instrumental in our summit to the top of the FUE field and he is a little more involved with regards to conferences, organizations, and colleagues. While Dr. Hasson may not be as involved to this extent, his contributions at the clinic level are not to be dismissed. His results will suggest that his lack of involvement does not diminish the quality of his work. In the end, if you are not sure who might be the best fit, let the team at Hasson and Wong help you decide. If we feel there is a reason why you should have one over the other, we’ll let you know. But if it comes down to either Dr. Hasson or Dr. Wong, you’ve already made the right decision😄

This Vancouver-area patient in his mid 30’s started losing his hair around the age of 25 - most noticeably up front. His hair loss gradually progressed, eventually advancing to around a stage 4A on the Norwood scale. He approached Hasson and Wong hoping to lower his hairline and restore the necessary areas of the frontal zone. His donor hair had good density and hair texture was on the medium to fine side. Dr. Hasson and his team successfully transplanted 3055 grafts via FUE in order to achieve the goals set forth for his hairline and frontal zone. 562 of these grafts were singles, 1919 were doubles and 574 were 3-4 hair grafts. His desire to have FUE also met with Dr. Hasson's approval and the fact his scalp had a little less than average laxity, it made sense on several levels. Thanks for the comments guys! The hair shaft diameter was less than average, chart notes indicate he has "fine" hair. Therefore more grafts were able to be placed in the relatively small area but not a stretch from what we're able to accomplish in most cases as far as high density where required. I think this is of some interest as I would have guessed based on the photos the hair to have a larger shaft diameter. A testament to Dr. Hasson's rare ability to create this type of density and result with fine hair. Here are some additional "Intra-OP" pics taken about halfway or more into the procedure. The post-op donor pic doesn't show much due to his hair length but his density was good and there's not any noticeable decrease in volume and density.

Vancouver area patient in his early 40’s had an overall decent head of hair but the weakness in the hairline and frontal zone was bothering him. He had good donor hair with texture on the fine side. Dr. Hasson and team transplanted 4035 grafts via FUE to rebuilt a lower hairline as part of a high-density frontal zone restoration. 328 were single hair grafts, 3239 were doubles and 468 were 3-4 hair grafts. With the option to elect either extraction method, the decision to employ FUE was made easier considering a tighter than normal scalp. These photos were taken at the clinic 9.5 months post-op.

Hi thebossman, Dr. Hasson has looked at your photos and is very pleased with the result. I agree with him that your hairline looks fabulous! As far as the donor area, he feels it does appear that the spots are alopecia areata. Certainly not from the FUE extraction. PlzRespond/Kiwi Guy, Sorry for any confusion here, the pics on the left are before the first procedure with the exception of the 6th photo set which I have labeled and are both post-ops after the last procedure. I didn’t have a good pre-op shot to match that angle. The only photo that is a pre-op from the last procedure is the one on the left of the last set with the clips in his hair. Since the temples weren’t a total reconstruction and just an enhancement, I would say maybe 300 -350 grafts?

Patient from Vancouver now in his early forties originally came to see Dr. Wong in his mid-30’s mostly concerned about his hairline and thinning in the crown. In his first procedure, Dr. Wong addressed the hairline, frontal zone and parts of the mid-scalp while also increasing the density in the crown. Dr. Wong and team initially placed 3812 grafts of which 1081 were single hair grafts, 2561 were doubles, and 170 were 3-4 hair grafts. The transformation served him well and he was very happy with the result for a number of years. Around 6.5 years after his initial procedure he decided he wanted to slightly lower his hairline and further discuss any other possible areas to improve. He and Dr. Wong then decided to also add a little more definition to the temples and increase the density of the crown. 1507 grafts were then employed to these areas of which 486 were singles, 808 doubles and 213 were 3-4 hair grafts. These photos were taken only 6-month post-op from his second procedure with more improvement to come. We didn't have a good 3/4 pre-op pic so I put 2 post-ops here imed post-op from 1st procedure imed pre and post-op from last procedure

Hey Upshall, Sorry for the delay, I meant to get back to you on your question sooner. It would depend on the extent of the previous work and how bad it is. In some cases we could start the repair at about 8 months, for others, we may want to wait until closer to the 1-year mark. Ironically, the worse the previous work is, the sooner it may be able to be addressed.

Bman3082, In most similar cases, the tissue looks good after removal of the grafts and is not an issue. If the previous work has created a lot of scar tissue and disruption, the scarring can be a little more pronounced but I’ve never seen a case where it didn’t look much better than before the offending grafts were removed. I've even seen cases where the previous transplant was so bad that after the grafts were removed the change was so dramatic the patient almost considered leaving it without proceeding to stage 2 of the reconstuction! Upshall, We do perform some unshaven FUT depending on the number of grafts and how much existing hair is in the recipient area. But in the vast majority of cases, a shave of the recipient site to some degree is preferred. jj51702, I don’t have any good pre-op and immediate post-op shot of the donor but I’ve posted a couple of post-op shots below. I have also added a couple more pre-op photos that better show the 2 hair grafts just to the left center of the hairline and the large gaps between the grafts.

Vancouver area patient in his early 30’s. Without the proper initial research, he fell victim like many others who might have felt that there may not be a big difference from one clinic to another. Likely influenced more by cost than quality, he chose a clinic in Istanbul for his first hair transplant. As can be the case with many locations, there can be a number of choices, not all created equal. As this site has stated for many years: “Be Careful!” It did not turn out as he had expected and he wanted to correct the previous work and achieve his original goal of a nice hairline with good density. Upon evaluation of the work done in Istanbul, Dr. Hasson noted the hairline and tissue exhibited ridging, cobblestoning, misdirected hair, multi-hair grafts, low density, etc. All of these conditions are unnatural and can draw the wrong type of attention. Today’s modern hair restoration should never present any of these conditions. Excision of some grafts inappropriately placed that blunted the temporal angles would also be required to achieve the most natural result. Shortly after his initial consultation, he came back to the clinic to have the offending 95 misdirected grafts in the temporal angles removed ( see photos with marker highlighting areas to remove). When the temporal angles have been improperly blunted especially with hairs pointing in the wrong direction, removal is often necessary if the most natural looking hairline is to be created. In some cases, we can work around poorly executed previous work but to what degree and with what sacrifices if any is determined case by case. Dr. Hasson and team then later rebuilt a new hairline blending into the frontal zone with 2,000 grafts via FUE. 343 grafts were single hair, 1329 were double hair grafts and 328 were 3-4 hair grafts. Patient in his mid-40’s from Florida. Previous procedure at another clinic back in 2000 of around 700 grafts. Dr. Wong and team rebuild a new hairline and frontal zone working back into the necessary areas of need including the crown. Of the 4490 grafts used, 1506 were single hair grafts, 2347 were doubles and 637 were 3-4 hair grafts. With his hair dyed, these photos were taken 1-year post-op at the time of his second procedure. In the second session, not reflected in these photos, Dr. Wong rebuilt the temples and points and increased density throughout. An additional 3532 grafts were employed and we hope to have updated photos showing the final result sometime later this year.

Flyinghotnow, If you consider his previous hairline to be where the stronger hair starts and not the weak hairline that remained, I would say as much as 3 centimeters lower in some areas give or take. The last photo (hairline left side) before the immediate post-op shot best illustrates the old hairline. No temple point work, they were good.
