Wouldn't mind some advice! 27 yr old considering HT

Hi everyone,

this is my first post here.

I've gone through different avenues in this hair loss journey... I was on medication a few years ago which I stopped after no longer being able to afford it. (I am in a country that does not allow generics, so you are forced to pay Mercks retail prices of $100 per month)

I'm not working, as I'm still in university, so my income isn't high enough to get a huge amount of grafts; but it's certainly something I've now started to consider again after just recently (approximately 4 months ago) starting on Minox 5% twice daily and 1mg propecia daily also...(1 more month to go on my script, then I'm going to ask my dr for a proscar prescription instead which should cut my current $100 p/month cost to approx $30 a month!) anyway, that's beside the point as far as my question goes.

I've made inital contact with a local HT surgeon and I can afford .. maybe 200-300 grafts at present what I don't know is, if that kind of number would give me a decent result.

I like to buzz my hair to either a 1 or 2 and that's one of my concerns with the HT... If you buzz your hair, does it still look realistic?

how many grafts do you think I would need to fill in the region of my hair loss, which in the photos s on the left hand side of my hair line.

I'm not looking to bring my hairline down, i'm just looking to fill in the left side... As you might be able to tell there is still hair in that area, but it's sparse (this is the region which I'm using minox on) so it may grow out a little bit more in the next few months. I'm not sure...

When my hair is longer, the crown used to be reasonably thick... that was until this last year, when it started to thin out a bit...

However, I'm hoping that the propecia can bring that back.

Agua,

Youve found the right place for advice and info regarding any potential HT.

I can only see your last photo, the others have not uploaded correctly. The thinning in the frontal third and hairline is visible, but it looks like you have thinning throughout. 200-300 grafts, should not be considered. I very much doubt that any reputable Dr.s would entertain this. Asthetically, whilst it would do little in regards to new hair, it would also leave you with a scar in the donor area which would not be worth, for these numbers. If you are serious about a HT, you must get in touch with a top Dr. Recommended here, on this site. Send them pics, get a plan and price from them. And decide if its for you.

Graft counts, even for "smaller ops", genrally exceed 1500. Also, I read that you mention a local clinic. Unless, your local clinic is recommended on here, or you have a similar community where you can see many patient pics, blogs, comparisons etc... then do not give them a second thought.

Do your research. Remember, that unfortunately your hairloss goals are a long term project, and the fact that you are currently at Uni and not earning so much is a no factor. You plan financially also. This is not a cheap journey. Plan and research every detail. Maybe you decide that this route is not for you, but be meticulous.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, your Hair loss looks pretty extensive to me and 200-300 will not even scratch the surface. You will need a minimum of 2500-3000 grafts in the frontal third. My suggestion is you can start seriously saving up for a HT from today and in a few years time you should have enough money to get a HT. Remember research is the key. Stick to this forum and do all the research you can, when you feel you a financially able then go ahead. Don't be in a hurry because a bad HT is much worse than not having hair in the first place.

Aguafria,

Welcome to this community! icon_smile.gif

You need to be certain your hairloss is from MPB.

Have you checked with doctor?

You need to go on and stay on meds. Minoxidil and finasteride. It is a pity that the country you are in doesn't allow generics.

I am in a country that does not allow generics

Are you in the European Union? Ireland?

I like to buzz my hair to either a 1 or 2 and that's one of my concerns with the HT... If you buzz your hair, does it still look realistic?

After you've had a hair transplant, you'll be more concerned with the scar and you will have revise how you want to present yourself, i.e. with buzz cut.

how many grafts do you think I would need to fill in the region of my hair loss, which in the photos s on the left hand side of my hair

To reconstruct your hairline and add density you will need initially 2500 grafts minimum, staying out of the crown.

You seem to have extensive hair loss and will eventually need more.

One option may be to do a megasession sometime in the future (Hanson and Wong are good)

take care...

Thank you, I appreciate your advice.

Just curious, but what makes you say that?

sidebar: although I have often thought my hairloss pattern is different to what I have seen on forums... I haven't put much thought into it being related to something other than MPB...

Not in the EU; I'm actually in the Asia-pacific region. You can import them illegally but the chances of them being seized by customs is so high, it's no longer worth the effort unfortunately.

Aquafria, as others have already mentioned, 200 grafts won't make a difference at all. My guess is that you'll need at least 2500 grafts, and possibly 3000+.

If you don't have the money now, you might want to save and do the surgery later in life. Another option would be to get a loan/financing to get the surgery.

I would never do a 200 graft transplant. It won't make any aesthetic difference, but you'll unnecessarily would have to go through a surgery.

I'm actually in the Asia-pacific region.

I buy my drugs online from www.unitedpharmacies.com.

They are based in the Oceania region, which is not too far from you.

The drugs are manufactured in India, by Cipla.

You can try that.

By the way, there are other types of hairloss due to other things like problems with the thyroid gland etc.

take care...
