Propecia and Erectile Dysfunction

Been on Propecia for 2 months and I've began to notice a change in my ability to maintain an erection. I'm quite alarmed by this since I'm only 22. At this age, I feel, a gust of wind should be enough motivation for my soldier to "take up arms." I have been a little stressed by relationship issues, but I'm not sure if this is the reason. Granted I've only noticed this problem when by myself, but I'm not sure what will happen when I'm intimate with a woman. I have had problems like this in the pass when I've been stressed over school and such. I assumed it was stress related. But this seems different in that this phase has lasted a little longer (about 1.5 weeks). Did anyone else have this problem with propecia? I don't want to resort to using viagra at such a young age. I'd rather lose my hair than be known as the guy who couldn't get it up. I'd really appreciate any input. Happy New Year!!

Hey man-

I'm 24 and on Propecia. I experienced ED for the first few months but it has seemed to have gotten better. Although, I must admit, my sex drive isn't what it was, but it still works. However, at our age I know we like to go out and drink and have a good time. I've found that when drunk, it is near impossible for me to get an erection...which sucks. I refuse to use Viagra at this age as well. You may want to try Yohimbe...standardized for .2% yohimbine. You can get it at any vitamin store or online. It's natural and it helps. Also, be sure that you'd rather be bald than a stud in the sack. You can always regain your erection, your hair is a different story.

Thanks for the reply man. It's a comforting to know that other people are dealing with the same issue. My only other problem with the medicine is that I'm still shedding like crazy, even after 2 months. I heard this problem persist through the third month of therapy. With all hope my hairs will stay on my head instead of falling into the shower drain.

Keeping my fingers crossed,

I started taking propecia on 1/02 and noticed improved hair results in 5 months. Before a scheduled HT, I wanted to see how/if propecia would improve my hair. I had a HT on 6/02 with great results and everything worked fine up until about 10/02 when I began experiencing ED problems.

Since it's known that it takes time for the body to absorb the medication, it's clear to me that the problem is the medications that inhibit DHT. As it's also known that these medications react differently in each individual's hair improvement, I believe that the medications will also affect one's sexuality with variant results. I noticed even more ED problems when I began to use Proscar and cut them into quarters, which I began doing earlier last year to cut costs.

During the year, I (and my wife) accepted the trade-off between using the medication to retain my excellent HT results along with my reduced performance. Before this, we were very satisfied with my HT results, and I wasn't even considering a 2nd HT procedure because of the huge improvement I had to my hairline and the propecia was maintaining the crown area.

We recently decided that the medication isn't worth it's weight, and that I'm now going to schedule a 2nd procedure to surgically improve the crown, since propecia really only improves the top crown area anyway. I will use the medication only until the results from the 2nd procedure are apparent, then reduce the dosage down to null. So that's what I'm going to do to improve my ED and return to normal! I'd rather pay an extra $8,000 and feel normal.

That's awesome. I plan on being in your shoes one day with the hairtransplant. I'm happy that your experiencing great results. For the younger guys in this forum, all we have are propecia, rogaine, and the advice from guys like yourself who have been battling hairloss for years. However, for people who are at least 8 years away from an HT, it's hard to say goodbye to propecia but possibly even harder to say goodbye to our sex lives.

Ankur -

I experienced heavy shedding near the temples of my front hairline at about my 10th week on Propecia. It subsided after a few weeks. I started to use Tricomin in addition to the propecia and it has helped tremendously (especially in the crown). It's pricey but I would recommend it over minoxodil.

Hang in there. Some people don't see regrowth and/or retention for a year. I think it's worth the wait.

Take care.

Hey MikeScott,

How long were you taking hair loss drugs? And after you stoped, were you able to have normal erections again? I'm concerned about the longterm effects of Propecia. If the medication doensn't work, I don't want to find out a year from now that I can never have normal erections. I mean Propecia says that people who stop therapy regain normal sexual function, but Im skeptical of this claim. I say this because of Propecia's claim that less then 2 percent of users suffer any sexual side effects, but it seems that most people on this board, including myself, have suffered some kind of side effect. I feel that not everyone in the 2 percent group can be part of this board. Im probably over reacting to the whole thing. As you can imagine, losing your hair and and ability to have sex at 22 is VERY scary. I mean appearance and sexual ability are everything to young folk such as myself (and the old as well). Anyway, tahnks for all your help guys.

Scared Sh*tless,

Ankur

Ankur,

I've been taking the propecia since 1/02 and am still taking it. I only plan to stop after I'm assured the 2nd transplant has improved my crown area, which is the only reason I'm taking propecia at all. Studies have proven that the drugs are more effective in the crown area.

I began losing my hair at 21. No drugs were available but if they had them to improve my hair situation I would have taken them, and yes it would have been a tough decision to continue if it affected other areas important to me as a male. You could say some women don't mind, but I know from experience having hair plus performance never hurts either.

I was on propecia for about a year and the only thing it did for me was ruin my sex life. I couldn't preform as well and i couldn't do it more than once without having to wait for ever. It has been over two years since i stopped taking it and still have notice no change in my sex drive, and even on many occasions me and my girlfriend have noticed very little siemen. Is there anything that i could possibly take to correct this instead of the very expensive viagra.

Propecia can cause a decrease in libedo and ED. I've been on the meds for 7 years and noticed it after about 2 years on the drug. It comes and goes, However, when it is an issue- Viagra definately does the trick and then some. When you have this problem, take some Viagra and it will be like your 18 again.

I think its worth mentioning that there is a phenomenon known as "performance anxiety". This occurs when someone is nervous/anxious and is put in a stressful situation (e.g. naked with a woman), and the brain causes the body to retreat. The fact that you're taking a drug which is known to cause sexual side effects in some (note: 2% based on the research, but take that statistic as you will), may be enough to trigger some performance anxiety, where your ED is more mental than physical. Not saying that this is what you're experiencing, but it happens. Think about it (well not too much ;-P)

Hey, I'm 21, I've been on Propecia for like, 11 months now. It hasn't helped to much with the hair, it's still goin'.

And I also have soryisis (sp?) (btw, does anyone know if this will make my hair fall more?)

I've never had a problem with my sex drive really. However, just to be an ass, I HAVE tried Viagra. And while it maintains a huge erection for me even after ejaculation, I noticed my performance suffers and I'm slow (mentally and physically) and I end up huffing and puffing a lot.

So, I dunno. It's weird. Anyone got some info on this?

One of the biggest advantages of buying products online, apart from getting the product in the comfort of one's home, is the ability to know all about the product before actually buying it. however, doubts are being raised about the purchase of prescribed ED drugs via internet. Out of the gamut of online pharmacies, it is a real tough task to choose the one that is providing real prescribed ED drug. People also have the tendency of going for the online pharmacy that is providing drugs at a comparatively cheaper rate. The only way to prevent the sale of fake or tampered ED drugs through the net is to educate the people both on the drugs and on the procedure to buy these drugs online. (promotional link removed)

Erectile Dysfunction is a very common problem and is faced my many these days. There are various reasons behind this disorder like stress, diabetic, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and physical injuries, but the exact reason can only be judged by specialist. So it's very essential that people suffering from this disorder should consult the specialist and not use any medicine without advice. You can have the information on ED and Levitra on (promotional link removed)

Using this medicine gives you instant result which is long lasing.

My friend is in living relation. A time back her partner has suffered from erection problem. Some one of his friends suggested him just try Levitra medicine. Now there is no problem in there relation. Loss of erection is a sexual dysfunction. It's not a normal issue but it can be treated. Some one of his friends suggested him just try Levitra medicine. Now there is no problem in there relation. I just want to tell that if there is any problem in your relation due to some sexual issue than it can be removed.

Some people would disagree. There are people who claim to have permanent ED from Fin, and there are doctors in Sweden or somewhere doing a study on that.

These websites are scarey, and almost had me stopping the Finasteride 1.25 mg I started only 21 days ago.

Today I called Dr. Rassman to discuss it and he relaxed me by saying if after 21 days if I haven't had any symptoms of ED (or anything similar) then I am not in the 2% of men who will experience side effects). In addition to the majority of hids patients taking the drug, Dr. R takes it himself as does his son, and they have not had side effects. My sexual desire and performance has not been impacted whatsoever (certainly it helps that I have a smoking hot 25 year old wife); verified that again today just for peace of mind.

However, this subject still has me somewhat nervous. There are entire websites dedicated to discussing side effects of Finasteride, with so many folks posting their awful experiences, it makes one question if indeed only 2% of users suffer from side effects. Many of the folks posting claims the side effect didn't begin for years, and even after they have been off the drug for years the side effects have not subsided. These men claim they live with ED, infertility, decreased sperm count, decreased libido, shrunken and/or deformed penis and/or testicles, enlarged breast, depression, foggy mind with poor memory, inability to articulate as well as they once could, etc... I read some of these sites and questioned if it is worth all of this risk to retain more hair for a longer period of time, or just go natural and get a HT every 5 years (like a new car).

For now I am going with Dr. Rassman's expertise, continue with my 1.25 mg of Finsteride, and trust in his professional opinion.

I'm beginning to wonder about that 2% BS. DHT is responsible for "all things male" and is a very powerful hormone, more so that even testosterone. I went to a wellness doc after complaining of fatigue, low libido, etc and my testosterone was low, but also my DHT was at 17 due to the propecia. Along with HRT, she had me go off propecia immediately, but warned that it could permanently screw with my libido. Fortunately, that was not the case with me and things came back. If I have to make a choice, it will be horny and bald.

I am in my mid 40's and have been on Propecia for about three months. I have noticed a slight drop in sex drive and some ED (not enough to ruin my sex life) although it is difficult to know whether this is because I am expecting this to happen as I am aware these are accepted side effects to this drug; and the mind definately can play tricks. I haven't noticed any reduction in ejaculate. It is certainly concerning me the view that reduced sex drive may be permenant. As to whether it is working on my hair who knows? It looks the same, I don't think I've lost any more but it may have been like that without Propecia. And this is the dilemma all of us are in. A very expensive dilemma. I'll confess to being interested in HT but would hate any post op staring at my head with a "What's he done up there?" expression. My older brother's bald head spurs me on to continue the medication. And my vanity plus my profession (entertainment) mean I have to take all of this very seriously.

I empathise with all of you.
