Worth starting down the transplant path?

Recommended Posts

I little background on me. I've been losing hair since I was about 17 years old. Rogaine did wonders for me back then and even regrew hairs. However I had to stop using it since I developed a pretty bad scalp reaction (very itchy) to both the liquid and foam versions. Since then I've been taking Propecia, sometimes the name brand, other times the generic, for about 10 years. My hair has been hanging on pretty well with Propecia use, however the side effects are concerning enough for me that I want to stop using it altogether.

I've done 3 in-person consultations with different HT doctors and I think I found one that I'm comfortable with and have read some good things about (Dr. Bradley Wolf in Cincinnati). Most of my hairloss has been in the frontal area with not as much on the crown. I'm thinking of doing an FUE transplant that would be around 1500 grafts for just the frontal area. What I'm curious about are the following:

1. Given that I won't be able to maintain my other natural hair for much longer with Propecia, is it even worth doing a transplant?

2. My thought has been this: do the frontal transplant and let the other hair go. Genetics says that I'll lose it all minus the normal U-shaped pattern. Going with FUE I asked Dr. Wolf if when I lost enough hair and I absolutely hated the way it looked, if shaving my head was still an option. He said only somebody specifically looking for the white dots left behind by FUE would really notice them. Would anyone else agree with this?

I also asked Dr. Wolf why he's not listed on hair loss sites like this one. He mentioned there's a significant membership fee that each doctor has to pay to be on here and that he's been in the business long enough with enough word-of-mouth credibility that he doesn't need to be here anymore. Given that there seems to be a lot of scammers out there, can anyone confirm that Dr. Wolf is a very skilled transplant surgeon?

I don't know anything about him, but I was pleasantly surprised looking at his gallery. The photos look good and an honest representation of what to expect and it looks like it is good work.
