Is generic brand as good as original

Im currently taking propecia 1mg, but im thinking of switching to a generic brand due to the cost factor. Is it safe to order online because i have been buying my medicine at a local drug store which is too expensive.

What's wrong with getting it at a Sams Club or Walmart? I think it's 9$ for a 4 month prescription.

I always used generic 5mg Proscar and quartered the tablet. I was paying $9 for 30 pills resulting in a 4 month supply. Some people have stated that they don't believe generic is as good but I personally believe if you purchase the drug from a reputable source, there should be no difference whatsoever.

 

Previously, generic 1mg finasteride was not available in the US but all that changed recently.

I used both Propecia and generic finasteride for many years and found very little to no difference. I no longer use either due to being tried of minor side effects, particularly the lowered sex drive and a little belly fat, and due to the fact that I now use minox and trichogen with supplements for far better results.

I agree that it does make a difference where you get it. Before I quit finasteride I was getting it from Indian online sellers and eventually, after one going out of business and the other never being able to get my order past customs due to their giving away free Viagra samples with purchases that people kept stealing their shipments to obtain, I got fed up. I was told by a Canadian company that American sellers no longer support in anyway the finasteride obtained out of India because it is no longer regulated in any way.

Lets define what it is we're talking about here.

 

"Generic" is anything that says "finasteride" on the box instead of either "Propecia" or Proscar". Proscar is the original medication that contained finasteride and it comes in 5mg tablets and it is aimed at prostate problems. Propecia comes in a 1mg tablet and is aimed at those with hair loss problems. They are the same medication but with three differences; dosage, marketing and cost.

 

Generic versions of both medications are made by a number of varying companies but not all have the same standards even though, according to the FDA, they all meet specific requirements to be allowed for sale. However, it is in our experience that this is not the case and we have been recommending only name brand Proscar or Propecia for our patients for years.

 

I have spoken about this many times and I have been attacked just as many times by those that for some reason get offended by my warnings. The reliability of the generic forms of finasteride are in question and recent evidence has validated my observations.

In the above link two generic products were called into question regarding their bio-equivalency. I also had a pharmacist come in for a consultation and we were talking about finasteride when I brought up the subject of generics and this exact issue. He confirmed to me that generics in general are not always the same as the original and used Lipitor as an example (I think it was Lipitor). He said that original Lipitor had 52 patents filed for the formulation where the leading generic cracked 13 of those patents. I find this to be very disturbing not just with regards to finasteride but to all medications.

 

If Propecia is too expensive at 170 bucks for four months supply (120 tablets) you can halve that cost and still get the real medication by cutting up Proscar tablets into quarters. Proscar costs me 80 bucks for 30 tablets so if you cut them into quarters your monthly cost is only 20 bucks. It's cheap, it's the real deal and you don't have to worry about ordering it from sketchy online mystery pharmacies.

Take it for what it's worth. In my case I started with brand name Propecia and I didn't notice hair falling out like I do now while I am on the generic version. Perhaps I just didn't notice it before or maybe the drug lost it's effectiveness. I will continue to research this debate. I have been told by doctors that there is absolutely no difference other than the name and legal issues. The chemical make up of the drug is the exact same, so they say.

I used brand name Propecia from 1998 - 2005. I switched to generic fiansteride in 2005 cutting it in 1/4's.

 

In 2011 I was diagnosed with BPH, I have been using 5mg of Finasteride since.

 

I have not seen any decline in my hair over the years, I know for a fact the finasteride I am getting is legit because it shrunk my prostate.

 

I used to get the generic from Walmart but now get it from Aetna mail order at $12/90 pills

 

Millions of people ( including me ) are on generic blood pressure medication, a medcation that is very easy to tell if it's legit or not.

 

Mayo Clinic prescribes 90% generc drugs, if there was an issue I doubt they would do so. Mayo is much more than a group of dr's and can and does test drugs on site. This was told to me by more than one Mayo Clinic Dr and Pharmacist
