HypoThermosol Adoption in Hair Transplantation

BioLife’s HypoThermosol is increasingly being used by leading hair transplant physicians as an optimized ex-vivo holding solution for both the explanted tissue strip and dissected hair follicles.

The formulation of HypoThermosol has been shown to extend the ex-vivo storage interval for these biologics, while maintaining viability and in some cases, promoting faster engraftment of transplanted follicles.

A series of comparative experiments on HypoThermosol and the standard saline solution were conducted by the research team at BioLife Solutions.

Figure 1 (right) below includes representative flourescent micrographs (A, B) and brightfield images (C, D) illustrating the morphology of hair follicles stored in HypoThermosol or saline.

Figure 2 is a graph of follicle viability after extended ex-vivo storage and extended culture conditions in either storage solution.

Figure 3 illustrates six month hair re-growth for follicles stored in either solution (different follicles used in Figures 1 and 3, Figure 3 image provided by William Parsley, M.D

“The most significant limitation to hair transplantations is that there is a fixed and limited amount of good genetic hair that can be transferred to the balding area. Considering this limitation, physicians should use techniques and technologies that ensure the highest percent of grafts survive and grow.

This is why I use HypoThermosol as the holding solution for the grafts.

HypoThermosol reduces the harmful effects of “tissue reperfusion injury” by:

scavenging free radicals

preventing gradient formation that causes shrinking and swelling in response to temperature changes

minimizing apoptosis and necrosis by maintaining proper pH, structural integrity, and ionic balance inside and outside the cell membrane

Interesting! It's nice to see the solution compared to normal saline, but I'm wondering if the data would be different if compared to other popular mediums like PRP, PPP, PRP + ACell, saline + ACell, etc.

Thanks for sharing.

Dr. Koray Erdogan is using it in his clinic. He should me the bottle. Its very expensive but a great storage for FUE grafts which need intensive care. I think lately Dr. Bijan Feriduni is using it as well while most of other doctors using Saline due to its availability and low price.

Very very interesting discrepancies in those photos. Given what FUE doctors charge for FUE, it should be a standard holding solution or at least a chargeable option given the FUE follicles contain less protective tissue.

So far, I found out 3 top FUE surgeons using it in their practice (Dr. Erdogan, Dr. Shapiro since 2 years ago and Dr. Feriduni recently).

I had a procedure with Dr. Barusco in Florida last year and he also uses it. If I remember this is the same solution used with donated organs when transported in order to preserve them. I've heard it's very expensive but certain doctors see the importance and its benefit to include it in their practice.

Kudos to all those that do!!!!!

Sounds like Dr. Barusco can be added to the list as well as Dr. Cooley and Dr. Rahal. I heard several other clinics but I can't recall right now.

Pandora,

You may want to check with the Farjo's in Manchester if they started using it.
