Please help! Need Some Advice on the best course of action in early stages

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some advice on how to tackle my own issues with hair loss. I'm a "newbie" and want some opinions before embarking on anything that costs me lots of $$ and may not work.

I am 28 years old and very self-conscious about my as yet slight, but definite, hair loss. I have been told by two separate hairstylists over the past year that I am not going bald, but there is definitely less hair on my frontal scalp than there used to be and I'm not imagining it. Looking at pictures of me ten years ago, and now, confirms this beyond a doubt. My forehead is higher than it used to be, and there's just less hair there. It's most evident when I have just stepped out of the shower.

I don't seem to be balding, per se, but there is just less volume in the front. It doesn't seem to be receding from the sides, but the frontal hairline has definitely moved back from what it was.

My dad, who is 60, has balded considerably, but in a rather odd pattern, it has receded from the front but he never had a bald "vertex" in the back. Looking at him from behind you would never know he was totally bald in the front. (Seems to be the "Norwood Type A Variant.")

I want to reverse this and get back the thick hairline I used to have. But I don't know where to go for the most effective treatment, and I don't want to be scammed. I am not wealthy and can't afford a $5K or $6K program at this time, and am wary about even receiving a "free" consultation by a hair restoration specialist. I looked up this forum to see if maybe I can get pointed in the right direction by fellow self-conscious men who really, really don't want to go bald.

Can others on this forum identify where I'm at, and please advise me what I should do? Should I try propecia or another topical treatment, or go for a consultation with Medical Hair Restoration? If need be I can supply photos.

If you aren't balding then you are most likely experiencing a maturing hairline. But you probably are balding, so get on Propecia or Proscar (same drug, different dose) as soon as possible. If you want a consultation, find a doc that is recommended on this site, preferably a coalition doc. Do not waste your time with MHR, Bosley, Hair Club, or any of those hair mills. They don't have the best track records.

But as mmhce said, post some pics. You'll get much better feedback from more members once they get a look at your head.

ciao for now

Thanks for the reply... the pics below are both from about a month ago. The one on the bottom just seems to be a bad hair day, but it really does look from that one like I'm losing hair...

I wanted to post a high-school era pic, but don't have one right now.
