FUT procedure and preshaving

Eddy,

It depends. Some surgeons insist on shaving the recipient area before implantation of the new grafts, other physicians do not require it. Altogether, I think the consensus is that shaving does help visualize the scalp and allow for easier graft placement, but many surgeons will not require you to shave if you don't want to.

Eddy,

If the doctor really thinks it is a good idea, I'd at least consider it. When you think about it, having the "monk" appearance for 6-8 weeks is likely worthwhile if it leads to superb results in the end!

I'm willing to bet that most (if not all doctors) prefer you would have it shaved down prior to the HT, while some doctors require it.

I gave my doctor complete freedom to do whatever he wanted to my hair prior to surgery, so I could possibly get better results. He shaved the front half of my head, as well as the area where he took the strip.

The real pain is post-op after the new grafts shed, especially if you already had a good head of hair before the procedure. Cleaning the recipient/donor area might be easier, sure.. but you won't be able to hide any of the work done for at least a couple months. Be prepared to hat it up for the foreseeable future.

Shaving of the donor nor the transplanted area is necessary. Most doctors do this for their benefit, making their job easier, but then the patient pays the price looking different and having to wait to grow their hair back to look normal again.
