Not Sure if Balding But scared

Hey, I'm 17 almost 18 and I'm very scared. I've always had a really big forehead but never took notice of my hairline until around 4 months ago. There appear to be a lot of finer hairs. I've always had a thick head of hair and I'm not sure if the hairs have always been there. So my question is is it normal to have some finer hairs at the hairline? My hairline still looks pretty good it just has some thinner hairs towards the end. I've tried looking up on the internet to see if that is normal but I just can't find anything. My hair has always been pretty long. I also have not noticed any shedding. I'm not comfortable posting pictures so if i haven't explained it well enough just say so. Just fyi my mother's side has no history of balding whatsoever and my fathers side has pretty much none my father has no hair loss. I'm just so scared. All I can think about all day long is my hair and its getting absurd. I'm constantly running my hands through my hairline to check and see how it's doing. I cannot keep going on like this. My hair is a huge part of my identity.

Jenkins-

Welcome to the forums! At 17 years old, it is my personal opinion that you are too young to be obsessing over your hairline!! You should be out hanging out with friends and enjoying your youth!!! ;)

There are a lot of "what ifs" with the hairloss thing, so worrying about whether or not your hair is getting finer isn't going to do much to help even if it is. If you are seriously concerned about it, schedule an appointment with a physician for a consultation to help you determine the current (and potentially future) state of your hair. You are too young just yet (again in my opinion) to start taking any of the medications to help halt the loss.....yet until you determine that you are in fact experiencing loss....well, then you don't need them anyway.

In the meantime, continue to keep an eye on things....just not as closely as you seem to be doing. You will have a lot of time (and a lot of information) to help you make a decision for treatment when and if you should need it later on down the line.

In the meantime, you have come to a great place for advice and support. The guys here are great, and feel free to reach out for help along the way!

Best of luck buddy....and keep us posted!

I wouldn't worry too much right now as most people at your age start to develop a more mature hairline and think they are going bald. This is very normal and happens to most people and does not mean you are going bald. Don't worry about, just keep an eye on it and if you see the situation get worse in a year or so you can consult your dermatologist or a specialist from this forum and see if you should start on preventative medication, but right now that doesn't sound necessary.

I am a consultant for Dr. True and Dr. Dorin. These opinions are my own.

I disagree.

My mum noticed the tiniest bit of recession by the time I was 16.....at 20 I was severely depressed and luckily found propecia. Young people can go bald too, don't tell him not to worry. I knew of 2% minoxidil at the early stages, I wish I'd have known about finasteride and stronger minoxidil too.

2,000 grafts FUT Dr. Feller, July 27th 2012. 23 years old at the time. Excellent result. Need crown sorted eventually but concealer works well for now.

Propecia and minoxidil since 2010. Fine for 8 years - bad sides after switching to Aindeem in 2018.

Switched to topical fin/minox combo from Minoxidil Max in October 2020, along with dermarolling 1x a week.

Wrote a book for newbies called Beating Hair Loss, available on Amazon
