Shedding and Shock Loss: Follicle or Shaft

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm new to the board and have been considering various forms of hair restoration for while now...I'm considering a Propecia/Rogaine regime for 6-8 months now and then possibly a small FUE in the temporal area...lot of it depends on what I learn from the board.

I'm curious about shedding or shock loss and then regrowth phases....when you lose hair this way, is it just the shaft/keratin fiber that is lost while the follicle remains healthy but otherwise dormant for a time? Then after a while, the follicle begins a growth phase?

Also, I'm reading threads that say that HTs are a permanent fix...guess I was wrongly under the impression that the average hair follicle had a 5-7 year life span.

I think you're getting really mixed up, hair shafts grow for about 7 years then another hair grows after a rest phase from the same follicle.

All hairs shed after the 7 year cycle the difference is dht affectable hairs which are usually in the horse shoe area of your head grow back miniaturised and probably don't make it to 7 years as oppose to the donor hairs at the back and sides that grow back thick as they've always been because dht does not have a affect on them follicles.

I started losing my hair at 19 in 1999

I started using propecia and minoxidil in 2000

Had 7 hair transplants over 12200 grafts by way of strip but

The finasteride/minoxidil regimine is undoubtedly the most effective medicinal combination to use when battling MPB.

But be sure to give them enough time, more like 9 months to 12 months to see if they have stabilized or greatly slowed down the progression of MPB before surgery.

Hair follicles receptive to DHT cycle back weaker each time they fulfill their respective growth cycles. Both the cycle period gets weaker over time as well as loss of hair shaft diameter.
