last week I got the chance to sit and talk with Dr Reed in La Jolla Ca along with Dr Meshkin in Newporet beach-

Dr Reeds office was awesome, i got lost getting there, and his office assistant was super awesome and whne i finally got there, I had a great talk with her- we clicked on a very friendly manner- she told me that they get clients from Ireland, Japan and Austraila-

when I sat with Dr Reed, it was a great experience- he was friendly, he asked what I wanted, and we talked- he feels that a transplant right now would not benefit me, b/c i am young and still losing my hair- which i thought was great b/c he wasnt trying to get some $$ out of me- he said i could do it, and look great now, but in 5-10 yrs, the hair i have now, may be gone and it would not look so good-

i told him i started rogaine, and he thinks that it is working on me already, b/c he sees small 'fuzzy' hairs on my head- and if i am balding, where the small fuzzies are it should be shinky bald, so he thinks that the rogaine would be great and i should conitnue with it. he laso prescribed me Proscar b/c that will help greatly as well, esp since he says he uses it also. he told me to do the 1/4 of a tablet daily and such and said that something will show in 8-12 months and wants to see me than. he took pics of me, and i had a great ecperince overall.... especially afterward when i looked up Proscar and had additional questions and talked to him via email and he responded the next day... even though he was on vacation.

Meshkin was nice, he brought me into his office, showed me a bunch of pics of before and after shots of past clients (one of which was Rick Springfield)

she showed me the procedure he would use, in this 10 yr old book, and the procedure was his that he created himself-

he was friendly- and showed me other pics saying 'this is what i would do for a first procedure, a second, etc...

i told him that i was taking rogaine and will be taking proscar, and it didnt seem to interest him

he wanted to scedule the surgery, but i will hold off to see what results rogaine and proscar will do for me- i am optimistic and glad that both of them told me similar things (that since i wanted to get my crown down, that it would not be beneficial b/c the hairloss there is still very possible)

both felt that the front would be best, but like i said before, i will hold off jsut to see what the combo of proscar and rogaine will do

Taker, Great! You are doing it right.

As you can see you will get varying opinions from different doctors.

I like the Dr. Reed approach.

It sounds like he has your best interest in mind.

Good Luck,

absolutely,

with Meshkin I was in and out of the office in 10 minutes, dont get me wrong, he was nice, but i felt he wasnt sincere...

When Reed was done talking with me, he asked me if i was satified, and showed true concern

Meshkin told me i had 6000 graphs available, but Reed wasnt as optimistic.. he said it was too hard to tell b/c my hair cut was too short, to tell- and i will re-iterate on how he was against immiediate surgery b/c he wanted the best results (that if i got it now , it may look good, but with future hairloss, the good job will look shady...)

obvious i was more happy with the office and Reed overall-

i just didnt like it when i em,ailed him some concerm over Proscar-- i told him that i had read that proscar and propecia should never be interchanged and his response was " i dont know where or why you looked that up"

i trust him overall, but i felt it was a bit snappy- i mean who wouldnt do some research on something.. especially since i am being prescribed medicine that is for prostates- but him being a GREAT dr was quick to say that proscar and propecia are alomst identical, and it would be a cheaper and it will have the sameresults

Reed- good

Meshkin- good, but i tihnk in it more for $$$, but does want a happy client

Dear Taker,

I enjoyed our talk as well. Sorry for sounding "snappy" regarding your email about "never interchanging" finasteride and finasteride (Propecia and Proscar). My quote does sound snappy! Please accept my apology for shooting the messenger for the message. In my humble opinion this misinformation has been the concerted marketing effort of finasteride's creators.

I suppose I can't fault "the creator" because they did work a miracle of sorts. Nevertheless finasteride has the pharmacodynamics such that it is the PERFECT medicine to take in imprecise doses as such imprecision has no clinical consequences when the pharmacodynamics are taken into account. (One can almost take the drug every other day without loss of effect and 1mg of finasteride blocks 62% of DHT; 2mg, only 70%...so taking too much or too little doesn't matter.) So, bottom line, my opinion continues, it is misinformation (to put it politely) that the two drugs should not be interchanged.

Perhaps the misinformation efforts relate to the 1mg dose of finasteride (Propecia) still having no generics vs the 5mg (Proscar) having generic equivalents for almost a year now...or perhaps I'm just too cynical!

With best regards,

Dr. Reed

wow, its awesome to see you on here-

no need for apology, you are an excellent doctor and has a great staff (i am just so sorry for being so late that day, but Pam was awesome to sit and talk to!!)

I think was just a bit concerned when it comes to understanding huge and important information.

Im sure you understand that clients will do research after talking with doctors,

heck with having two brothers, both in the medicine field (one being a doctor, a urologist and the other being a Pharm MD) I tend to use them for info whenever I talk with a doctor , just to see what their opinion is.. Unfortunately, hairloss is an extremely sensitive subject to me, and is a joke to them, so talking to them over this was Not an option, so I had to go to the next best thing - good ol' internet, which of course isnt the best source, but helpful, and that is why i had second guessed Proscar, but now I fully and truly understand it, and hopefully anyone else who reads this will talk to their doctor about using Proscar instead of Propecia.

i cheerfully take back the 'snappy' comment

i will be taking month to month pictures of the results that I will have from using the combo of the both, and I plan on seeing you in 8-12 months!!!

Thank you again for being the best at what you do!!

Taker,

I'm glad to see you have taken the initiative to do multiple consults and spend some time researching before taking the plunge. After all, hair transplantation surgery should never be taken lightly.

Dr. Reed (a member of our coalition) and Dr. Meshkin (recommended) both do excellent work IMO. Though our recommended doctors meet a high level of standards, understand also that our coalition doctors go above and beyond.

Learn how clinics are recommended and the differences between a coalition and recommended doctor here.

Good luck in your research.

Bill

I had my surgery with Dr. Reed and have been very pleased with the entire experience... That is, the consult; the surgery experience and the post-op availability of Dr. Reed. It's a bit early to tell results since I'm only 10 weeks out but I'll keep you apprised as things develop. I have a Web Log with updated 10 week photos.
