Pregnant wife and Propecia?

Recommended Posts

I was taking Propecia about 3 years ago and am thinking of going on it again since I am still loosing hair. I held off taking anything for the past year because we were trying to get pregnant and about 4 months ago I managed to slip one past the goalie! Thank you, thank you... My question is "should I wait until my wife has the baby before I go back on Propecia/Proscar due to any adverse side affects it may have on them?"

Also when I go back on the drug what dosage should I ask my doctor for?

Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) can have NASTY effects on an unborn child, especially male formation of the manly areas. That is why they are so cautious about warning people about especially if you are using Proscar which is 5mg tablets and you are breaking them apart to get the reomended dosage level of Propecia (1mg) as the residue from the tablet can be drawn into your wife's system if she comes in contact with it.

If it were me I would stay far away or keep the pills at the office and wash your hands after you take them. Stick to propecia as you do not have to break those tablets apart, more expensive but that is not even an issue with this.

If your wife is already pregnant, there is no problem with you going back on Propecia-- JUST MAKE SURE YOUR WIFE DOESNT TOUCH THE PILLS...keep them out of the way-- then you have no problem.

What about sexual intercurse during the pregancy period?

If you are a doc, great you should acknowledge this in the post. Giving someone medical direction whether solicited or not is really not the intent of this forum.

If you are not a doc, then I would suggest relaying information about the issues to the post. Also in most states giving medical direction is illegal!!

Telephone Man,

I appreciate your concern and I agree with your statements. However, just read the FDA PI on Propecia and the product monograft which outlines the questions asked about about pregnacy, category, side effects, adverse events, drug to drug interactions, metobolism, chemical makeup, ect. Also look up the PDR. This is the same information the doctors have available. This will provide you all the answers you need. And I'm not giving direction, just medical educationed knowlegable opinions regardless if I'm a specialist surgeon or not. The last time I reviewed the medical laws, opinions backed back fact and resources are not illegal-- matter of fact any opinion is not illegal. If you mistaken my comments as directions to follow without your own research and communication with your own medical personnel-- I appologize. Regardless of how many years of medical education, practice, specialty one might have-- one should never make decisions without personal consultations. This forum is for knowledge and education to help in understanding the issues-- not to provide direct medical opinions.

Sorry for any inconvience in your view of postings.

I think the truth is we don't know with certainty. I think the prudent thing to do is stay off the drug if you're having sex, until your wife delivers your child. You cannot trust the pharmaceutical companies to tell you everything, in my opinion. Look at what's just happened with Vioxx and Celebrex.

The truth is that women should not handle the drug while they are gestating. It can cause birth defects in a male baby if enough is absorbed through the skin....Why someone is handling your medication is another question????

Here is a real visual for you, the amount in semen is so small that it would take 600 gallons for there to be enough finasteride to cross to the woman in the sperm. There is no reason to stop the medication while your wife is trying to concieve or during pregnancy. Both of Dr. Cooley's children were concieved while he was taking it and his wife is also a physician. Get back on it so you do not lose any more precious hair while awaiting your new precious off spring ! Congradulations!

Very interesting postings.

Smoothy, I came across a little harsh on that one, your posts have always been informative, what I should have said was please reference the source of your information so the rest of us could also look at the 'official' medical postings.

Hey Telephone Man.Its great that you are concerned about other people but Smoothy gave his opinion to Huha and is a great help to everyone here because if a doctor was accessible and could answer all my question we would not be posting here.

It is sad to see that when someone is helping out instead of being appreciated he is being attacked.

Smoothy thanks for your help to everyone on this forum you are great.

Scared Now,

Understand your point, that is why I posted the clarification on my comments. I just feel that it is important when someone indicates it is ok to go ahead with something related to a medical issue it would be of great assistance to simply point out the source of the information.

Thanks
