Hi, I went to the derm the other day, because I found 3 small bald spots on the top left side of my scalp. The spots were very red and inflamed. The derm gave me some foam and said to use it for a month, if there is not new hair in a month, he wanted to do a scalp biopsy. My question is what things is he looking for? What types of conditions could it be? I tryed to ask the derm, but he really did not give me an answer, he said the spot did not look like normal mpb. However I am thinning all over. I also would like to know where to get the cheepest proscar, money is very tight, thanks

rob2, welcome to the site! Good idea going to a Derm first off and checking out what is going on up top.... Obviously you have something other than MPB in these particular areas. I would recommend that you clear up this issue FIRST before adding Propecia or Dutasturide to your list. Red, inflamed skin is not consistent with MPB, so just to be on the safe side, I say wait it out and let your Derm clear you up first....

I agree with B..............I wouldn't commit to a regimen until you resolve the scalp inflamation issue. I do know a person that experienced hair loss due to scalp inflamation but I'm not sure what they called it. I'd press your dermatologist to resolve this ASAP so you can decide how to move forward.

The dermatologist will probably do a scalp biopsy to rule out scalp melanoma if the foam, probably intended to clear up fungal infection, doesn't help.
