Young guy, new here w/ question about Bosley

It seems alot of you guys on here hate Bosley. I am 22 and went to a consultation last week in Beverly Hills. They suggested 800-12000 grafts and take propecia. I was wondering why exactly you guys don't like them. I have read many horror stories on here of HTs but not from a specific instition.

Alot of those stories, however, are from years ago, and I can only assume places like Bosley have only more perfected their craft. From everything I was told and read, this seems like a simple, minor surgery that won't really hurt. They said I could have a minor scar on the side of my head and the scabbing wears off in days. After that the hairs come in real subtle, starting out as fine hairs that keep coming, until months later it all comes in.

Like I said, it seems like even if I don't get the desired coverage, I won't come away deformed and with a huge scar and all of these terrible things. But now reading you're guys' stories and from another site, I'm nervous this might end up being life changing for the worst.

I was evaluated by Dr. Steven Gossard. Anyone know him? This post is long, I apologize, but if I can get your thoughts that would be cool.

Mr G,

Being in California, you have other options, even if you don't want to travel. Like someone else on the forums said, it is *possible* that there are good docs in Bosley and some of the other chain clinics but this is not something you want to leave to chance!

Why not schedule consultations with other docs in your area with a proven track record of great results!

Hey Mr. G. First off, seriously consider if you even want to have a surgery. Once the donor scar is there, it's not going away. This surgery is not a cake walk like they've told you. After a hair transplant surgery, you go through an awkward period while your body repairs itself. If after serious consideration, you decide to go ahead with a surgery, I would not recommend going to Bosley. I did and regret it. Like others have said, there are probably some good surgeons at Bosley. However, why not choose a surgeon that has a proven/verifiable track record documented by independant sources. Take a look at the docs on this site. In my opinion, your chances of success will be much greater and you will spend the same or less on the surgery. Good luck!

Mr. G - At 22 years old, I'd recommend forgetting about hair transplantation for the next 5-10 years. Try the non-surgical solutions such as propecia/proscar and rogaine.

It sucks losing it at a young age, but trust me, you'll see many of your buddies, co-workers, etc. also experience hair loss in your next 5-10 yrs. Work on other areas that will increase your self confidence and that you have greater control over; such as further developing your career, physical fitness, etc.

An HT at 22 has higher risks. Losing hair at that age most likely means that you'll end up with a higher degree of future loss, NW5-7. In the future, when the time is right and you've stabilized your loss w/ propecia, pick a doctor that has a long track record of proven results, not Bosely...

Propecia works in the back, not in the front right? That's my problem. So in 5 years I'll just keep losing it inthe front. I don't want that to happen. But I should look around more I suppose.

Hi Mr. G - while propecia (in most all cases) will not regrow hair in the front, in can halt or slow down the loss in the front. Propecia has been shown to be most effective in the back (crown area). With significant loss in the front, an HT (in most all cases) is really the only option for regrowth.

At 22, an HT can be an emotional decision and IMO, for you, it is best to wait 5-10 years to make it a more thought out, logical decision. There's a chance that at 30 you won't give a care as much about the hair loss.

1st of all, I had a HT w/ Bosley last year and they fucked up my head, so these stories arent from years ago. They are still happening. 2nd you sound so non shallant about a "minor" scar. Is a 12 inch scar that makes it look like you had a libotomy "minor" to you!

It's clear that you are not ready for a procedure of this type. You need to do more homework and realize that this is a major decision that you will have to live w/ the REST OF YOUR LIFE.

P.S If you think that this is a minor procedure take a look at my picture here!

I can't see your picture.

Regardless, no need to get so harsh with me. I was only repeating what they told me. Obv your guys' stories are much different, that is why I'm asking in the first place. I'm not nonchalant about this, I'm worried and that's why I'm on here. They said it was a smaller scar, you guys say it's twelve inch scar. Ok, now I know. Geez. They made it seem like a no big deal procedure, considering the amount of hair I have, but you guys say otherwise.

I feel like I've done alot of research this year on it, but I admit I probably need to do more.

MrG,

I appologize if I came off a little harsh, But Bosley really ruffles my feathers. You are one of the lucky one that found this forum before you took the plunge. As far as the pic goes I meant it as find my pics thru the search engine by typing in "dakota3" and you'll be able to see what it is that they mean by "minor".

Dont buy into the Bosley hype. This procedure is a huge deal that you have to live w/ the rest of your life. GOOD LUCK!!
