This is my HT story. I have had 5 procedures done at Nuhart in PA starting back in 95. They were all mini and micro's only about 450 at a time. My results were very good in my eyes and I was comfortable with what I had accomplished considering I would be a total "chromedome-horseshoe head bald buck" if I had not. ie. a NW 6 and some. As time passed I was very comfortable with my HT and would volunteer this to girls I dated or friends etc....they were always in disbelief until I showed my lovely doll hair in the back. I had many 4 and 5 grafts to give me the density to cover my acreage! The down side was I am a surfer and when you have anything other the FU on your head they look fake wet or windblown.

I found out about The Shapiro Medical Group via a friend whom wanted to get a HT done. I had never even heard of FU transplants. After seeing his work done I was sold and wanted to get a little more work done on me. My problem was donor hair. After a phone consult with Matt Z with digital pics in October and a 3 month wait to get a appoitment I arrived in MN in January to -4 temperature after a 8 hour plane ride from Hawaii. I stayed at the Country Inn and Suites, very clean new hotel with free breakfeast and lots of free shuttles to Shapiro, airport and that mega mall which I spent a lot of time in. My surgury was scheduled for the next day so I had a day to goof off, go to the mall and watch the snow fall....remember I live in Hawaii!

Surgery day I arrived early to met Dr Shapiro and we spoke about my existing work and he mentioned there was lots that could be done to correct or actually make it better....nip and tucking here and there. I met Matt and DR. Rose and when they looked at my donor hair and lack thereof, thats when things got challenging. I had a huge scar from the Nuhart boys and almost no donor hair left. Rose brought in Shapiro and they both consulted about what to do. They even left the room to talk about it with me sitting there with Matt Z hoping that I did not fly all the way from HI for nothing. They came back stating the best way to appoach me was by not doing everything possible right now( I was hoping for 1000+ FU's). The best thing for me was to try to get 300 to 400 FU's clean up the scar, and remove some of the larger minigrafts that had pitted and cobblestoned (thanks Nuhart) in the front hairline and towards my crown. I still have a bald spot on my crown. And save the remaining donor hair for later. They both agreed that I get on Propecia yesterday to save the rest of my native hair, and I have since started, no side affects as of yet. Shapiro wanted to hold off on the invoicing to see what they could do first.

The surgery was a breeze, the numbing neddles suck ( not nearly as bad as I remembered) but we're men so we take it. All the techs were very nice, there must have been 6 of them. I was the only surgery that day. This aint no hair mill!!! Shapiro came in many times to discuss with Dr. Rose of what they were gonna do from the drawing of the lines to before, during and after the donor extraction. They even cut out that nasty scar. What usually takes 15 or so minutes took an hour and 20 with me. I was cool though with two valiums inside me. They brought me lunch, soda's etc..whatever I asked for, even watched a movie. I was so comfortable that I fell aslseep during part of the process. Fianlly at about 4 pm I was done, I had gotten there at 8 am. They ended up getting 631 FU's, removed and recycled 37 older large minis to single FU"s and placed most in the central tuft area and along my hairline to thicken and soften it up. Just looking at the little suckers poking out was a nice change to my very staight hairline of earlier. I felt great. Shapiro came over and inspected Rose's work and both commented and how much better it looked, not to forget that nasty scar was now gone. I never new it was that bad, I wear my hair almost shoulder length usually in a ponytail which covers my bald spot.

I was about to leave when I mentioned to Matt that I had not paid yet. He then spoke with Dr. Shapiro and came back with a number. Their instate rate is $5.50, out of state is $4.50, and over 12 or 1500 is $4.00 per FU. I had 631, scar extraction and 37 punch outs trimmed down and recycled. Their number was a lot less then 4.00 per unit and no charge on the other services. I was stunned. As a busniness owner I know what overhead costs are and they did not make ends meet on Jan 14. What they did was, lets do whats best for our patient and that was impressive to me.

After asking about a restaurant that delivers Dr. Rose then suggested I join him for dinner. I am thinking "are you kidding" of course. The shuttle was gonna take a little time to get me so one of the tech's Pamala gave me a ride back to my hotel 5 minutes away. Dr. Rose picked me up at 6 and we went to a killer restaurant nearby and had a super meal ( I had grilled pork tenderloin) Living on Maui I know what good food is and this was very good. Dr. Shapiro was gonna join us but did not make it. We had great conversation and I felt very little discomfort from the surgery just hours earlier. I had a bandana on my head to cover the scabs which I did not mind but others probably would. Dr. Rose would not even let me pick up the check, he insisted on paying after I spent so much already with them that day... I was floored!!!

The next day I went in for the shampoo and again everybody, Shapiro, Rose, Matt Z, Marge, Shelie, and lovely Cori ( dont ask her out she's hooked up, I tried!!) were all very nice. Later I saw another movie at the mega mall and caught my flight back to HI the next day. Now its 11 days post op, gonna get the donor stiches out and I feel great. My scabs were all off in 7 days and so was the hat. Nobody has noticed anything different about my hairline. I still have lots, almost all of the grafted hairs still in there with no shedding as of yet.

My plan now is to wait and watch em grow in the next 3 months. April will be a great month! Now after 6 HT's my hairline can only get better. If you are thinking about a HT only go FU's no mini or micro's.

Rose and Shapiro are true professionals and could have done a lot more work on me and charged a whole lot more but did not. They did what was best for me which is a little at a time. I can now go back if I like and get little touch ups to improve here and there, but I am happy right now and have no plans as of yet. I will wait a year or two and see how it all turns out. That is my longwinded story. If you have any questions just reply. aloha

I am impressed too. I wish more doctors would give extra consideration to corrective patients, because we are the ones who need help the most.

Good luck and I hope your results are everything you are hoping for.

big it up:

Glad you had a great experience. A lot of similarities to mine.

I had 2205 FUs transplanted. I paid for 1800 FUs just prior to surgery and was not asked to pay for more. $4 per FU, and my hotel plus airfare was about $500. So $7700 for 2205 FUs is about $3.5 per FU including all my costs.

What is great is that you get a good price, top doctors, and those guys are completely courteous and professional at every turn.

Dr Rose struck me as extremely generous, as he did to you. I wrote my story elsewhere in another thread.

I'm glad Shapiro Medical "does it right". They treat you professionally and courteously and they have plenty of results to back up their methods. If they take a loss some days, they know they'll make it up other days because of their rock-solid reputation. I'm glad they do business that way. And I'm sure they are quite successful -- deservedly so.

Funny that you brought up Cori. Haha, I got "inside info" as well that she was "hooked up", as you said. So friendly and courteous I remained. I wonder how often she finds a patient flirtatious? Ironic that men looking to improve their looks and just post-op are flirting with her. Sort of funny, I think.

Congrats! The tough part is the wait and watching the suckers fall out. But it is only temporary. I am looking forward to the next few months myself!

Yup, he's associated with both. I think that he may be associated with Bernstein as well. I know he lists practices in Tampa, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and New York.

WTF

Yeah my Nuhart experience was me asking how much work would I have to get done to get coverage and density..and their reply was well one more and you would look great....How about after you go in the next day and they send in a salesman to try and pitch your next appointment!!! what a "hair mill" they were....Did you get any corrective work done later or was all your donor used/wasted?

WTF

If this is possibly your last one you can do..make sure your going with somebody whom can "fix" your previous work. I had Doc Rose get 631 FU's from a donor strip on eitther side of my head and he pulled out 40 or so of Nuharts big ass mini's and trim them down and reinsert them. He also took out a big ole scar...Dr. Rose and Dr, Shapiro said there still little things they can do by taking out the big ones and getting a little out of the back of my head. Oh they also took out some mini's that were too big and pitted in my hairline... Just looking at my hairline now it looks different ie better.. and after it grows out it will look even better...

If you havent called them yet, do yourself a favor and check em out...I referred a friend to them this week and I got Dr. Roses cell phone number, my friend called him up and could not belive how friendly he was and that he took time out to talk to him about his current hair needs. You definatly need to go somewhere that knows repair jobs... they are a lot more challenging.

good luck and keep me posted. aloha

40 something

Your lucky the propecia and rogaine have been working...I had no idea Nuhart has been around since the 80's... how many HT's did you get done there?? I cannot remember any of the peoples names there...my consultant may have been Jay?? not sure...cant remember the doc's name...

do your research this time around....you only have so much donor hair left...make sure the doc you pick has done lots of corrective work, not just first timers....as I told Dr. Rose and Dr. Shapiro, " you guys need a good challenge sometimes, these guys with virgin donor hair are a piece of cake" ...I laughed, they just kept looking at my nasty scars and lack of donor hair!!!

Keep everybody informed on your decision...I feel like if I can help somebody in this forum , I will save someone a lot of disappointment and $$$.....As a 6 timer HT guy...I am actually use to those needles that numb ya!!!

I had two HT. I cannot remember of the numbers of graphs. I am probably blocking all those bad memories icon_wink.gif. One HT was at NuHart in 1989 and a second in 1990 with another doctor who was had his own practice. I can't recall his name but he was also in Pittsburgh PA. He was recommended by some other NuHart patients. The second doctor did an excellent job at cleaning up the scar and tried to hide the plugs. He did not use follicular hair units. Was not plugs either. He did very few grafts but quality work.

Thanks for the post. Thanks for the suggestions. I will certainly post my experiences. This web site is well needed and the posts are gold. Wish I had something like this in 1990.
