There really isnt a definitive answer. There are some people who have slightly higher percentages of their hairs in the dormant or active phase. Most of the time there is a percentage and some people are within or slightly below/above. It is hard to compare one to another (unless you have a twin sibling). For the most part, you can probably guess based on your family history.

But with that being said, to answer you question. You can add dutasteride at any given time, should you receive a prescription from your doctor you can talk to them about the dosages and if you want to split the medication between finasteride.

I personally only take 0.5mg of Dut daily and 5mg of Oral Minox. (i take 2.5mg tablets daily one in the morning and one in the evening to extend the half life) and I havent experienced anything major.

I will say tho. whenever you take one of the new medications you may experience some symptoms early on but they may subside over time or you get used to it. But make sure you note how you feel and express any concerns with your physician.

Thanks for your detailed answer! Gradually upscaling could be worth a try.

  2. Hi guys,

I was wondering what would be the best moment to add dutasteride to my fin + minox regimen. The amount of hairs that I shed daily is normal (50-100 maximum), but lately I would say 1/5 of those are slightly miniaturized.  Is this an indicator that finasteride should get some help from the dutasteride to block more DHT? Or is this normal from time to time?

I must note that I don't see any thinning yet, so this would be a precautionary measure.

    Thanks!!

  3. Hi all,

Does miniaturization always mean that the meds don't work properly?

FYI: I'm on 1mg. oral finasteride and 2,5mg. oral minoxidil daily. Been on it for about a year now and I had great progress. Now I often see some light hairs being shed (my hair color is medium brown). Visually there's no thinning to be seen.

At what point would scaling up the med intake be worth considering, generally speaking?

I forgot to put this photo in the thread, this is small part I wanted 200 grafts enhancement, I split my hairs here intentionally to reveal the area, in reality it's not so noticeable.

Damn man, you look amazing considering what's happened!

All the 'not a candidate' yellers should see this. Who cares that the donor area is a little thin with that recipient!

  5. I‘m reading a lot of ‘not a candidate’ judgements on this forum, without knowing the posters expectations, while these can be very subjective.

Let’s say someone has a higher norwood and a average donor (hypothetically), but his preference is to have less-ideal density hair rather than being completely bald.

Do clinics tend to decline their service based on these kind of preferences, unusual as may be?

  6. Hi thmns,

Yes a HT does cause scarring, but it can be very minimal depending on which clinic you choose to get a HT. Use this forum to do your research.

    There are two main types of medication;

    • minoxidil (topical or oral) promotes hair growth due to better blood flow mainly. Safe to use unless you have very low blood pressure.
    • finasteride (topical or oral) mainly lowers DHT levels and therefore slows miniaturization proces of hair follicles in the scalp. Overall safe to use, but some men experience side effects. Regarding conceiving, generally the advice is to pause the intake one month prior.

We really don't know the exact mechanism by which DHT causes hair loss, but my understanding is that the "consensus opinion" is that the DHT binds to the hair follicle and somehow that causes a restriction in blood flow. What's odd about this is that DHT binding to the hair follicle PROMOTES hair growth in literally every other hair follicle on the body..... There is a lot we don't know about hair loss and a lot of contradictions in certain models, so it's definitely not a dumb question.

So for some guys DHT could be the main culprit of hair loss, but for other guys it's theoretically possible that they might have vascular miniaturization from other causes that contribute more to their hair loss than DHT binding.

    Very interesting, yet confusing!

But wouldn't this logic mean that body hair isn't really suitable for implanting in the scalp, while taking DHT blockers, as transplanted follicles are donor dominant?

Most people when using medication to improve blood flow to the scalp see their hair thicken.

Most people when using medication to decrease DHT levels see their hair loss slow down.

I once heard it described as fertiliser and pesticide; the hairs will miniaturise and eventually die unless you reduce DHT (kill the pests) Increased blood flow will give the appearance of more hair for longer as it'll be thicker (fertilise the crop).

Usually the pattern of loss can be used to identify MPB.

That sounds like a plausible analogy

Thanks! It was quite a search but I see the doc talking (1:12:00) about one of his patients not washing the Toppik out, which caused inflammation on the scalp. Not too surprising when someone does not clean the scalp. And not surprising that this doc is very cautious about concealers in general after this experience.

Was told by the doctors assistant I have 1000 - 1500 grafts left for another procedure in the future. He only looked at the photos I sent him earlier this year though.

I asked Dr. Keser yesterday via his translator and he said he'll tell me how many grafts I have left after my hair grows out a bit.

I'm curious to know. All comes down to aesthetics eventually.
