  1. Most younger guys with some degree of hair loss will only progress to higher Norwood levels over time. Hair transplant surgery can work wonders but is limited by the amount of available donor grafts so it's important to exploit every tool at our disposal.

Though there are no guarantees with Propecia and Rogaine, they offer a chance to slow the natural progress of male pattern baldness and might even regrow hair. For this reason, many hair restoration physicians strongly encourage their patients to commit to these medical hair loss treatments. Starting medical treatment about 1 year pre-op may even substantially reduce the number of graft required to meet a patient's hair restoration goals. That also provides time for the patient to determine how well they tolerate finasteride.

If medical treatment is not an option, that might disqualify someone as a candidate for surgery or, at the very least, this can be factored into the long-term hair restoration plan.

  2. KO,

I agree with others above that, while your pics show some cosmetic improvement, the results appear to be subpar for the number of grafts. I see you are already in contact with the clinic. Please keep us posted on their assessment and your plans moving forward.

In the meantime, I am also going to contact the clinic regarding your case and suggest that they share their perspective here as well.

    Best of luck!

  3. I wish I could give you a definitive answer. I have never used 2% but I used to use 1% Nizoral 3 times per week. I never had any bad reaction to it but, after using it for years, I couldn't say for sure that it was benefiting me. Ultimately, I quit using it.

I know from discussions on our board that quite a few people have experienced adverse reactions, including hair loss that in some cases did not regrow.

Have you read this thread started by Spex?

  4. Welcome!

Our community maintains a list of recommended hair transplant surgeons worldwide. To see how we pre-screen and recommend doctors, click here.

We also provide some additional resources to help patients research and consult with quality hair transplant surgeons. I recommend checking out these patient created hair restoration websites. They can be searched by physician name. You can also easily schedule free online consultaitons with recommended doctors here.

With some exceptions, the cost of FUE seems to average between $6 and $8. Some clinics publish their prices. Others require a consultation.

    Hope this helps!

  5. It's commonly known among regular forum members that smoking constricts the blood vessels and inhibits the supply of oxygen to the cells. This can impact post-surgical healing. Having said that, some guys never quit or even reduce their smoking and still obtain excellent results. It's one of those things where many factors come into play.

No one will be able to successfully predict if or how it might affect their results. I don't smoke but when it comes to anything that could potentially harm the outcome of a hair transplant (or any other surgery for that matter), I like to err on the side of caution.

In your particular case, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. You quit smoking during the most important pre-op and healing stages. After 2 months and with very little smoking, I'm sure you're grafts are just fine.

  6. From what I can tell, everything looks perfectly normal at this early stage. It would be highly unusual for any new hair growth to be visible until at least the 3 month mark. In most cases, guys end up looking as bald or balder after the initial post-operative shed than they did prior to surgery. In some cases, many of the transplanted grafts don't shed at all but keep growing instead.

Hang in there. It's a tough time but try to stay positive. Once the growth starts, the changes should come steadily. That's when the fun starts.

    Happy Growing!
