  1. In order to repair a poorly-executed transplant performed by another surgeon, this 41-year-old man underwent a combination of two approaches with Dr. Carlos K. Wesley: 1) a follicular unit extraction (FUE) session in which a total of 2483 grafts (from both scalp and beard) were placed followed by a skin micro pigmentation (SMP) procedure to the donor area. His hair follicles were incubated in autologous (his own) platelet rich plasma (PRP) throughout the duration of the procedure. This, combined with an ATP-containing storage solution has been shown to enhance survival of transplanted hairs. Rather than a larger FUE punch used by a robotic approach, Dr. Wesley used a smaller caliber hand-held motorized punch to performed the donor harvest. This approach better enabled the capture of donor hair roots that are slightly curved beneath the skin surface. Upon completion of the harvest, the patient’s donor area was treated with PRP and ACell in order to not only minimize scar tissue formation, but also encourage partial regeneration of donor hair follicles. The patient returned 16 Months after his procedure and images of the patient can be seen below.
  2. Thank you all for your kind comments. It is very rewarding for all of us in the office to be part of such a transforming experience for this 14 year old!
  3. For those interested in the current state of platelet rich plasma (PRP)scalp treatment for hair loss… The Dermatology Department of The State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY Downstate Medical Center) recently featured Carlos K. Wesley, M.D. as their Grand Rounds lecturer. In addition to providing a general overview of the mechanism of the PRP treatment and how it stimulates hair growth, Dr. Wesley lectured to dermatology residents and seasoned attending physicians about the technical variables of the procedure itself that can optimize the benefit to patients. An abridged version of the lecture can be viewed here. The full-length presentation for physicians is found on Dr. Wesley’s PRP page. While PRP may not work for every patient, the benefit our practice is seeing from this non-surgical approach to treating hair loss has been encouraging.
  4. As we look towards 2017, our office would like to reflect on this past year. Here is a brief montage of a few of our cases over the past 12 months. Included are: Follicular unit extraction (FUE), Follicular unit transplantation (FUT), Platelet rich plasma (PRP), Scar revision, Scalp deformity repair, SMP and more. We must also pay tribute to a few of the great musicians who left us in 2016.
  5. A jolly 51-year-old man had prior transplants from another clinic that left him with a pluggy hairline and a very tight scalp. One fantastic donor hair resource that had not previously been used was his long, white beard - akin to that of Old Saint Nick. He, therefore, opted for a follicular unit extraction (FUE) session in which a total of 981 grafts were harvested from his beard and within his scalp donor region. He also requested that Dr. Carlos K. Wesley NOT shave his entire donor region for the FUE graft harvest. Therefore, a long-haired FUE session was also performed. The patient returned one year after his procedure and images of the patient can be seen below. The patient’s hair follicles were incubated in platelet rich plasma (PRP) throughout the duration of the procedure.
  6. This 20-year-old man had grown frustrated with his hair thinning throughout the frontal half of his scalp. He was averse to taking Propecia or Rogaine and sought advice from Dr. Wesley. He underwent a combined treatment involving platelet rich plasma (PRP) mesotherapy coupled with 2-3 times weekly use of a 2% ketoconazole shampoo with caffeine. No other interventions were made. The young man can be seen before and four months later.
  7. Even five years after her initial hair restoration surgery with Dr. Wesley and his team, this female patient still has the hair fullness that she enjoyed when the newly-transplanted hairs initially grew in. With time, the transplanted hairs begin to take on the characteristics of their surrounding hairs. This “recipient dominance” means that the transplanted hairs soften over time - often becoming less “wirey”. This is especially true with FUE procedures.
  8. Without lowering his hairline, this 29-year-old man wanted to improve the density within his current hair pattern. He underwent a follicular unit transplantation (FUT) session in which a total of 2019 grafts was done with Dr. Carlos K. Wesley. He had been told by other doctors that it was not possible to work within and between his current hairs. He was relieved that this was not an issue while increasing the density throughout the frontal half of his scalp. As with all of Dr. Wesley’s patients, he was NOT required to cut his hair for the procedure. As a result, this patient was able to return comfortably to work and social activities within approximately 7-10 days of his procedure. The patient returned one year after his procedure and images of the patient can be seen below.
  9. A 36-year-old man underwent a follicular unit transplantation (FUT) session in which a total of 2292 grafts were done with Dr. Carlos K. Wesley. His primary desire was to “frame his face” more effectively by increasing the density throughout the frontal half of his scalp. The patient returned one year after his procedure and images of the patient can be seen below. As with all of Dr. Wesley’s patients, he was NOT required to cut his hair for the procedure. As a result, this patient was able to return comfortably to work and social activities within approximately 10 days of his procedure.
