Regular Member daw721 Posted August 27, 2008 Regular Member Share Posted August 27, 2008 I've seen quite a few people discuss this with some enthusiasm. A few questions spring to mind if thats ok: 1. Are there any downsides to taking it? 2. Do people take this (or advise taking it) on a regular basis or just after your HT when you are experiencing no/slow growth? Thanks DW

Regular Member daw721 Posted August 27, 2008 Author Regular Member Share Posted August 27, 2008 well have just been to HB to buy some MSM... I don't suppose it will have any bearing on the impacts of shock loss, will it?
Senior Member Jotronic Posted August 27, 2008 Senior Member Share Posted August 27, 2008 MSM is not something to take to help your HT hairs grow in faster. It helps any hair that was shaved grow back faster and that is pretty much the limit of it (and nails too as Spex said). Senior Member Tubs Posted August 27, 2008 Senior Member Share Posted August 27, 2008 Once HT hair has sprouted, wouldn't it help all hair grow? If MSM only helps existing hair grow I am going to boycott it on the grounds of discrimination! Senior Member Jotronic Posted August 27, 2008 Senior Member Share Posted August 27, 2008 Tubs, Yes, for clarification, once the hair has started to grow then it should grow in faster. To be more clear MSM does not help newly grafted hair pop through faster. If you would normally start to see new growth at three months then you not see new growth any sooner if you are taking MSM. Senior Member Tubs Posted August 27, 2008 Senior Member Share Posted August 27, 2008 Thanks for reply. I am using it at the moment, once my pre-HT hair has obtained a reasonable length, I presume I could stop taking it for a couple of months and start again when the HT starts to pop through? Senior Member Jotronic Posted August 27, 2008 Senior Member Share Posted August 27, 2008 You could but it takes a few weeks for the effects to kick in so you may want to stay on it through the waiting period. One thing it does help with, in addition to hair and nail growth, is tendon or ligament issues. I used to have a bum knee that would hurt like hell if I tried to do any running. During MSM use, the issue disappeared and my knee would not swell up or hurt after a run. Senior Member Tubs Posted August 27, 2008 Senior Member Share Posted August 27, 2008 Interesting about the tendon / ligament issue. I suffer from plantar fasciitis (the tissue between the heel and ball of my foot), I guess it might help that too. Thanks again. Senior Member JohnS Posted September 24, 2008 Senior Member Share Posted September 24, 2008 I really would not get involved with MSM, there have been so studies that point to long term toxicity. It is not worth the risk.
Regular Member jellybean Posted September 29, 2008 Regular Member Share Posted September 29, 2008 Let me make this cautionary statement as a pharmacist: MSM IS a natural product but natural does equal safe. After all snake venom is also a natural product. This applies to all "natural" products. Just make sure you do your research Make sure you are using a mainstream manufacturer so that you can assume safe and clean manufacturing processes. WARNING! If you have a sulfa allergy there may be a slight chance you could react to MSM. Though MSM is not chemically or structurally related to other sulfa or sulfonamides, sometimes people who are allergic to these drugs react to other substances in greater numbers than do people who are non sulfa reactive. Otherwise I thing you can take MSM without worrying too much about side effects. Sometimes very high doses can cause diarrhea but it usually requires VERY high doses
Regular Member jellybean Posted September 29, 2008 Regular Member Share Posted September 29, 2008 Let me make some clarifications prompted by my lack of typing skills I meant to say natural does NOT equal safe I meant to say "otherwise I think (not thing) you can take MSM without worrying too much about side effects"
