Minoxidil after Hair Transplant

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

What is the recommendation regarding returning to take Minoxidil after hair transplant ?

I have semi diffused balding and am taking Minoxidil (by solution with Finasteride + orally) for around a year now with great improvement at hair growth and density. However some areas of my hair got too much tinning and lack of growth so I've done a HT at these areas couple of weeks ago (with the clinic recommendation of course).

I've heard that there are benefits to faster hair shedding cycle and growth of transplanted hair with Minoxidil, and I also want to continue the good effects of Minoxidil on my native hair.

However, I assume that Minoxidil can also cause some damage to the HT if starting to take it too soon, however I do not know these bad effects (and would appreciate if you guys can elaborate on what they are).

I also assume that different clinics recommend different recovery method and times.

I was wondering what is the "general" and "common" recommendation regarding of when to start taking back the medication and why.

My clinic didn't know for sure and recommended me to generally take whatever I want after the "special shampooing " phase (which is about 14 days).

Thanks!

My case was similar.
I have HT only on the front.
1 week after HT, I continued to take oral minoxidil and oral finasteride.
14 days after HT, I added use topical minoxidil in nor recipient areas (middle and crown)
after 1 month, I  added topical monoxidil all over my scalp.

Good question, I will be following this thread 😁, I’m a month in, I’ve stayed on Finastaride and was wondering when to return to topical minoxidil. Think I will start Oral minoxidil to prevent any irritation.  Good luck buddy.

@O_O_O_O_O,

Each hair transplant surgeon has their own set of postoperative instructions including when to resume taking minoxidil. In general however, You should be free to resume taking minoxidil only after a couple days postop. The main reason why minoxidil is stopped prior to surgery is because it has a tendency to thin the blood.  But after several days, a week to be safe, you should be free to resume the minoxidil either oral or topical.

I hope this helps.

Thanks. Did the above protocol helped you at the hair growing cycles ? Meaning that you might have shed less transplanted hair, got the transplanted hair start growing sooner than normal (less than 3 month) ?

Thanks for the reply. The clinic said that it is better to not apply anything on the transplanted area on the scalp due to the redness. Begin applying topical's only after it gets fade away. Is there anything to it ?  Do I need to not pay much attention to the redness ?

Also, there isn't any distinction between the oral and topical Minoxidil in terms of time to apply after the HT ? Would you also consider topical Finasteride as allowed to be applied after that "week to be safe" ?

thanks again

I can't answer to this question.
To say yes or no, I needed a twin brother, making the exact some HT and not taking anything.
What I can I say, I had good results.

PS: from my personal experience, do not be scared of early shedding.
The earlier you shed, the earlier is the regrowth.
I had an early shedding but after 4-5 months, I was full regrowth.
