Regular Member KLHT Posted August 15, 2016 Regular Member Share Posted August 15, 2016 Hello everyone, I'm starting this thread to get as much feedback as I can regarding updating the hair loss treatment that I am on now. I'm a diffuse thinner in a NW5/6 pattern and I'm turning 24 years old. Been considering a hair transplant for about 2 years but I've always decided to wait and try medications instead. I never tried Finasteride although I know it can significantly improve my hair but I'm not willing to take the risk due to the side effects reported (sometimes permanent). Anyway, the below is what I am using now: 1) Minoxidil 5% for about 4 years now; it has somehow slowed the hair loss but definitely not stopped it. My question is what are some good brands that are out there? Is Rogaine Foam any good? I am now on Minoxidil Bailleul %5 but I feel it is not very effective. 2) Biotin 5000 mcg. I know this doesn't stop hair loss but makes my hair and nails grow faster etc... Considering: 1) Lipogaine Big 3 Shampoo ( to be used 3-4 times a week) 2) Nizoral 2% ( to be used twice a week) Q: Is that excess usage for both shampoos per week? What's your recommendation? 3) Your recommendation on vitamins that may improve or do any good to my hair. I heard some stuff about saw palmetto, should I consider it? I'd be grateful if you can suggest some package containing all these vitamins. I know there are many experienced people/physicians on this forum and would really appreciate to get their feedback regarding all points listed above. Thank you in advance for the help
Senior Member Tj287 Posted August 15, 2016 Senior Member Share Posted August 15, 2016 Kalab23, I see you've abstained from finasteride due to fear of the potential sides. Have you ever looked into progesterone as an alternative? It works in much the same way as fin (5-AR inhibitor). Do a google search for 'Progesterone DHT' and have a read. I have been taking progesterone since December 2014 and it has worked very well for thickening up my existing hair. I had a HT nearly 3 months ago and I will be continuing to take it into the future. I am currently taking one tablet daily (i think 100mg, but i will check tonight), but this will reduce to one tablet every two days once I hit 6 months after my HT. I have only upped the dose temporarily while I am in the sensitive stages of my HT. I am finding it tough to find data on the half-life of oral progesterone, but one every other day should give a fairly constant effect. My FUT with Dr Hasson in May 16: http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/184110-dr-hasson-fut-3-898-grafts-16-05-16-a.html

Guest ThemanJus
Hi Kalab, I use a combination of Fin, Minoxidil and Lipogaine. I have found that with minoxidil the foam over the topical solution works better for me personally (I use Rogaine). For shampoo's I read a review here and made my decision to use Lipogaine due to the keto. Cheers, TheManJ
Bill - Seemiller
Kalab, Thank you for sharing your hair loss treatment regimen. In my experience, most hair loss treatments do very little to fight against hair loss. The only real proven solutions are Propecia, Rogaine and debatably laser therapy. Adding other treatment options such as ketoconazole based shampoo like Nizoral and Revita isn't a bad idea. Nizoral can be harsh on the scalp, especially if you are using the more medicated 2% solution. Thus, I wouldn't use Nizoral 2% more than twice a week and Nizoral 1% more than 3 times a week. However, Revita shampoo is much gentler and I believe it also contains 1% ketoconazole. Thus, switching between them on a daily or every other day basis wouldn't be a bad idea. Many of the other supplements you mentioned help promote healthy hair and growth but do nothing to stop the progression of male pattern baldness. There's nothing wrong with using them and in fact, it will probably make your hair shinier and healthier looking. But don't expect much in the way of stopping hair loss with most of them. Best wishes, Bill
