Dr Johnathan Chan - Sydney

Recommended Posts

Hi there. Nice to "meet" you all. I am looking into getting a hairline restoration/lowering done. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with a Dr Johnathan Chan in Sydney, Australia?

Seems I've narrowed it down to two potential surgeons. Knudsen and Chan. The rest seem rubbish. However, I am trying to nail down some real reviews of Dr Chan at AHTI. He claims minimal scarring using a 0.7mm "punch" to extract hairs using the FUE method. Knudsen seems more like to push the FUT method as it's quicker and cheaper, but I don't want a linear scar at all and just don't like the methodology.

Chan seems to have been around for years now, surely there's someone out there that's seen him or used him? Perhaps no news is good news? ;)

Australian docs seem to be reluctant to go through the screening process of this network. I don't know whether it's just unawareness or if they think it's beneath them to subject themselves to a set of rules. His clinic has a money return policy so that seems to be a good sign. Then again I'd watch out for the fine print... Does Dr Chan offer manual or motorised punch? You should also consider that.

I once went to Knudsen because I wanted to lower my hairline and he recommended 700 FUT (?!). I told him I would not feel comfortable having a scar. He recommended if I wanted to shave my head post op I should not have surgery in first place.

I asked about FUE and he said it'd be more expensive and FUT is "what I do best".

I told him if FUT would really deliver better results I'd consider it. But then it got very confusing when he said the results would be exactly the same. It seemed to me that did not really have much confidence in his own FUE abilities... But if that would get him the job, he'd do it...

I then consulted this forum and they told me to RUN. I'm glad I did. The argument was that doing 700 grafts through FUT was crazy.

Can't comment on Dr K's quality of work but I'd agree that he has a very strong preference for FUT. HT docs in Europe that offer both methods would strongly push for FUE for smaller jobs.

Hi ZeoRanger,

Thanks for your reply. Dr Chan appears to only do exclusively manual punch and claims that he does all procedures himself which is another good sign. I have a consultation with him in about a month, I'll know more then.

Mostly I need to narrow down expectations. My hairline has been high since puberty which I think was a combination of genetics and being rough with my hair when I was younger (used to use cheap product and style it rough). The rest of my hair is quite thick though with fairly thin strands, so I have to be careful. Chan claims a maximum safe density of 45-50 units per square cm which seems like the normal agreed upon maximum. So he also doesn't seem like a cowboy. I'm thinking a "lowering" of 1-1.5cm would be sufficient with better framing around the sides. Aside from high hairline the men in my family appeared to keep their hair into old age with only various amounts of diffuse thinning.

Knudsen, without seeing me in person, recommended 1200-1300 grafts for my hairline. He definitely seemed more keen on pushing FUT when the rest of the industry seems to be moving towards advancing the FUE technique. After all, cosmetic surgery is all about maximizing our appearance. Knudsen said I'd be able to shave down to a blade 2 like I normally do but no promises about a blade 1. This kind of turned me off.

Chan seems to have been active since at least 2012 and if he was botching jobs I figure we would have heard about it by now. That doesn't prove anything of course, but it helps.

1200 - 1300 is nothing these days. Have you considered travelling to Turkey?

Hi mav23100gunther,

I've considered it. I did a quick look, can't remember who with, about a week ago. IIRC the entire cost would be around the same mark as going to Sydney when flights and accommodation are accounted for. But I'd get a trip to Turkey in the process. :D

Do you have anyone you'd recommend?

Yes sir - take a look at Koray Erdogan. He is producing knockout FUE results, and is able to do mega-sessions at ridiculously cheap prices. I would also recommend Dr Feriduni in Belgium - he seems to be best of the best. You can't go wrong with either of the above. If you are going with FUE, you definitely need to pick the right surgeon as their are plenty of clowns and butchers out there dic#?ng around with FUE.
