Senior Member Shampoo Posted August 25, 2012 Senior Member Share Posted August 25, 2012 I am 11 days post-op. When scabbing forms and a patient begins to very gently remove scabs is it possible there are sometimes hair in the scabs once they break loose? I am worried a graft with multiple hairs may have come out? I took a picture with my cell-phone and tried to blow it up, but it's not the best quality. But in the picture it's clear there are little hairs in the scab that fell off my scalp....or is it a graft(s) that came out? Regular Member aramis69 Posted August 27, 2012 Regular Member Share Posted August 27, 2012 This is normal, so long as there is no blood. I had many scabs come off with hairs attached to them. My Hair Loss Website

Dr. Glenn Charles
It is hard to tell from photo if there is a follicle present within the scab. I would not worry to much because removing one or two follicle should not change the final results enough to be noticeable. Senior Member Janna Posted August 28, 2012 Senior Member Share Posted August 28, 2012 Yup, it's normal to see hairs with scabs. The concern is if you saw them out a day or two after surgery but 11 days post op, it's to be expected. You'll start shedding majority of your transplanted hairs from now on till month and half after surgery. I bet the back of your head will feels much better with the staples out. Senior Member Shampoo Posted August 28, 2012 Author Senior Member Share Posted August 28, 2012 Thanks Janna that makes me feel better. One hic-up I just noticed this morning, the plastic surgeon missed one staple! There were a lot of them, but still hard to believe he missed one. His office is very close to mine, so I am headed back there later today. I could take it out myself....but I'm just gonna let him do it. Once staples are out, it's best to just leave donor scar alone isn't it? Or do some advise applying scar cremes and such? Senior Member Janna Posted August 28, 2012 Senior Member Share Posted August 28, 2012 It's fairly easy to miss one. You just need to go over the whole area so that you didn't miss any. Definately let him take it out. It's best to use proper tools and technique to remove them. Senior Member Janna Posted August 28, 2012 Senior Member Share Posted August 28, 2012 Sorry, I forgot to address the scar cream question ........ Some patients use Mederma scar cream that's over the counter. Some clinics carry the Iamin gel from Procyte for scars, you won't find the gel at your local pharmacies but if you're able to find some, use as directed on the tube. That goes for both Mederma and Iamin. If the right closure technique was used, you wouldn't necessarily need any creams. Majority of our patients don't use anything aside from applying antibiotic cream for few days after surgery, but it wouldn't hurt using scar creams as long as you use as directed.
