Dr. Carlos K. Wesley: 2701 FUE Postoperative Recovery

Recommended Posts

This 43-year-old male underwent a 2710 FU session of follicular unit extraction (FUE) in order to cover the frontal half of his scalp (including hairline). This video illustrates the early postoperative recovery following a large FUE procedure. It may help patients considering this approach by demonstrating the length hair in the healing donor area. Any residual scabbing in the recipient area can be cleansed with simple soaks and gentle shampooing.

Very clean work and looks like a rapid recovery from a large FUE procedure (approaching 3,000 grafts). I love Dr. Wesley's hairline layouts and the decision to close in the temps and bolster the sides. This patient should get a terrific result. Please keep us posted.

Questions: Is Dr. Wesley routinely performing FUE sessions of this size? Did this patient request/insist on FUE rather than strip, or is Dr. Wesley tending to recommend and perform FUE more often than strip these days?

Thanks for the kind words. During initial consultations with our office, all details of FUT and FUE are highlighted for patients. Although some patients are adamant about undergoing an FUE harvest rather than strip, most patients (who are good candidates for surgery overall) are given both options. In general, if patients wish to wear their hair only a few millimeters in length, I'll suggest FUE as the better option. We've been performing an increasing amount of FUE over the past 2-3 years in our office. Currently, approximately 20-25% of my patients opt for this approach.

This large 2701 FU session of FUE took place over the course of two days.

Most patients that opt for FUE over the traditional strip harvest do so because they wish to wear their hair at the shortest possible length. This patient, however, was simply motivated by the more comfortable post-op healing process in the short term that generally occurs after an FUE session.
