Hi

What happens if I decide to have a hair transplant but have previously used combe/minoxidil/propecia?

Should i stop using any of the treatments i have used so as to allow any hair regrown as a consequence of any non-surgical treaments I have been using to fall out so a surgeon can see clearly what hair i have and dont have naturally?

thanks

No, you should continue using all of those as they will only help you. What you have with the medication is your natural hair, if you stop you will obviously lose more hair in the future and make you require even more transplants. Continue using them and get evaluated by a doctor.

You would need to stop using mino a few months up to the date of the surgery, as it thins the blood. Then you can start using it 3-4 weeks after surgery. I didn't start using it until 3.5 months post op. I didn't want it to aggrevate the skin or cause any itching as I had enough of the itching to deal with already. That's normal too. Nerves would be re-connecting once again.

Definitely keep using the propecia.

Stoping minoxidil for a few months is extremely conservative and completely unnecessary. Minoxidil should be stopped for a week at most before treatment not months before, as you will be needlessly losing ground on your hair loss by stopping it for that long. You are at no risk of excessively bleeding even with use of minoxidil a day before surgery, it's simply a precaution that surgeons request you stop a few days prior to the procedure. You should wait until all of your scabs have fallen off (typically about 2 weeks after surgery) to restart using minoxidil.

Hi

Thanks for the replies

Is it necessary to keep using Minoxidil/propecia or laser hair coombs

after a hair transplant? I would have thought that having a hair transplant would be a permanent solution to hair loss and that other treatments would no longer have to be used?! therefore the investment of a transplant saving on the long term (for life) costs of and the effort of continually using minoxidil, propecia and laser coomb

That said if there is still some naturally occurring hair in the front of the scalp as I currently have for example at the time of a transplant I would expect that area would not need a transplant at that stage?

However if that naturally occurring hair then falls out naturally I would then perhaps expect to have to pay for another transplant OR before it falls out use Minoxidil/propecia and/or laser coomb.

Ideally I would want to stick to transplants due to having one off charges and not having to either pay regularly (minoxidil, propecia) or have the effort of their application (laser coomb and Minoxidil) or the risk of side effects (minoxidil and Propecia)
