Senior Member mattj Posted June 22, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 22, 2011 Hi moose45, I think females will form a steady part of the work of most surgeons. As female patients are a minority, there are fewer cases to be seen online and definitely fewer patients posting their results to this forum, so it might be difficult for anyone to recommend a doctor who has emerged as a specialist with female patients. From a technical standpoint, male and female hair transplants are basically the same - with the difference being one of aesthetics. A good hair transplant surgeon has to have a keen eye for observing the nuances of how hair grows and have the skill to replicate nature in the operating room. I think it's fair to say that the best surgeons for a lady seeking hair restoration will be the surgeons who have the best overall reputations for producing highly natural results. But with that said, you should always ask to see examples of their work with female patients. I am a patient and representative of Dr Rahal. Robert Haber M.D.
Almost all hair restoration surgeons work on female patients. Depending on the pattern of hair loss, a female hair transplant can be identical to a male hair transplant. However, if a woman is looking to strengthen the hairline and temple there are certain things that will be different. Size of grafts and hair direction, for example. As Mattj stated, highly reputable hair transplant surgeons in general are skilled at treating hair loss regardless of a person's gender. However, research is very important. Regular Member salami Posted June 22, 2011 Regular Member Share Posted June 22, 2011 I agree with with what everyone has said, but I would think that females might be more sensitive to having their recipient area shaved as part of the procedure. I know that many of the top docs do this (and feel that it is imperative to getting optimal results), but it is something that a woman would want to make sure that she is comfortable with before undergoing a hair transplant. Mattj and Spex, Since you represent a couple of docs that are in this camp, what has been the female response when they are told about the recipient area shaving? Senior Member mattj Posted June 24, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 24, 2011 (edited) Mattj and Spex, Since you represent a couple of docs that are in this camp, what has been the female response when they are told about the recipient area shaving? Women do tend to be more bothered by the idea of shaving when it it necessary, and some are put off by it. As a significant number are seeking hairline lowering and don't have any thinning to speak of, shaving is minimal if even required at all. Women tend to have more fashion options for covering the recipient area, and of course they tend to have longer hair which can be styled to cover it.
