JonathanB,

The follicular unit grafts are taken from a specific zone in the back of your head and transplanted to the balding frontal region. As long as the hair characteristics in the front of your head (before you experienced hair loss) match the qualities of the hairs in the back, the transplanted hairs will look identical (in term of characteristics - wavy/straight, fine/coarse).

Personally, I reviewed one case posted by Dr. Alan Feller where he performed a follicular unit transplantation case on an individual, and the hairs, which were naturally straight, grew out wavy. As I recall, he didn't really have an explanation and it did not seem very common. However, as long as the follicles aren't damaged and are implanted at correct angles, it should look the same (with the exception of the occasional hair that grows in a bit wavier than usual, and I observe this most frequently in older gentlemen where the transplanted hair turned grey).
