I am 3 weeks post op and I will be going to Florida in a few weeks. I will be wearing a hat most of the time but during the times I'm not I want to wear a sunscreen that is safe for my transplant, follicles etc. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I think it would be ok, but I'm not a doc. However, that Bullfrog brand sunscreen is the best as it's clear and doesn't require as much rubbing in. I would try to wear a hat mostly and try not to get sunburned though.

as Dewanye said, I would try to wear a hat as much as possible; for the most part, the grafts are safe from being damaged at 3 weeks post-op; however, the main concern with the sun is micropigmentation of the "new" graft skin;

At 3 weeks, the grafts are properly rooted, the skin is healed. You should be fine using any sunscreen as they will not cause any damage to the hair follicles. Look for sunblocks that have zinc or titanium dioxide although if you have alot of hair this could be messy. Spray sunblocks are easier on the scalp where you have hair.

 

It is best to use hats, seek shade and use sunblock and reapply frequently. The sun is intense here in Florida. More sunburns increases the risk of skin cancers which if they occur on the scalp or hair bearing areas will cause hair loss and graft detruction with subsequent surgery and or radiation treatment.

As long as you are doing sunblock, make sure it has a physical block, such as zinc oxide, in it. Not only do these provide more skin cancer protection, but the physical block may make the operated upon area less likely to have pigment problems caused by sun exposure in the early postop period.
