Scabs or grafts

Recommended Posts

Tommy,

If you are SURE you are seeing bulbs, then you are losing grafts. That is, these grafts never "took" and they are just falling out. Also, your scabs should have been off a long time ago.

Check with your doctor immediately and take photos.

Agree. I think you need to describe exactly what you see & what you mean by "bulb": the little dark ball at the end of the hair (no problem then) or the whole graft (hair + transparent "envelope"). It is not unusual for a few grafts to fall immediately after the procedure (say up to 4/5 days): I lost at least one that became loose in a blood droplet. But after 6 weeks it's another story.

Same thing happened to me @ 5 weeks. First of all when a hair falls out and has a little bulb, this is normal...the bulb is the root part and means it is a healthy hair that will grow back (you may have noticed that as your hair loss progressed some hairs have little bulbs, meaning they should've fallen out and others are hair with nothing at the end....these are dead and gone).

I've found that a HUGE misconception is that ALOT of hair that falls out has dead skin around it. Some bubbles up on your scalp like the graft is pushing itself out, some congregates around the graft and falls out with the hair, looking like a graft(I actually had a chunk of skin with 2 hairs running through it, but it wasn't a graft).

At 6 weeks the grafts took. The range I've heard is 7-10 days and they're set. After that for them to fall out, it mostly involves bleeding and ripping them out.

I'm noty sure if you saw your grafts before they put them in, but they look like a small grain of rice with 1,2, or 3(if you have a good doctor) hairs sticking out from both ends....not a hair with a little bulb at the end.

I was worried sick soooo many times for sooooo many reasons and I'm only at 11 weeks but thought my operation was a failuire so many times when it wasn't. I'll bet your fine. icon_wink.gif

I have seen that different doctors recommend different periods of time to wait to wash the hair post-op. If it takes 7-10 days on average for grafts to really "set", what are the chances that in that time grafts will be lost by washing (even say if it's gentle washing, e.g. pouring water on the scalp instead of using a showerhead). What about hats? Thankfully, all the clinics say you can wear a hat when you leave but if you put a ballcap on your head, inevitably there is SOME rubbing, even if the hat is fairly loose. I think a bandana would be a better idea as many on the forum have suggested, but the clinics themselves sometimes give the patients a hat.

Well, I would never wear a hat so soon, ya know, it seems like it would be so destructive. I did alot of research and went with a really good doctor and he said that they are almost set for good immediately, but to refrain from washing hair or touching it that day and the next day too (the remainder of the surgery day plus 24 hours). After this you wash by dabbing shampoo and rinse with a cup of cool water....do NOT scrub.

You want to wash soon though, wait no longer because you want a clean environment for growth and hygeine. If it gets infected your going to lose them all and be a scarred monster like this: icon_mad.gif Not sure how we got on washing and hats though.
