I am in the position that i waited too long before i did anything about my hairloss, IMO. This was largely because i began shaving my head to number 4 and lower so it was less noticeable and just pretended things were fine. However in the last year it became very noticeable and only then did i begin applying various potions and using propecia. This i believe has slowed down my hairloss, but there is unfortunately not much left. So my biggest regret is not starting all this earlier. we did however have no internet for a long time so i couldnt gain access to all this info plus in scotland propecia has never really been marketed to my knowledge. I only found out accidentally as i was watching a tv prog and they briefly mentioned it. People just dont seem to give this affliction any time, it seems to be just an accepted fact of life. Even when i went to see my doctor and explained things to him, i was 18, he laughed when i said would shaving my head with a razor help, this depressed me even further. Plus he said he couldnt really tell me about propecia or prescribe it as it was not availaible on the national health service. My advice would be to anyone at the early stages not to delay and get on propecia and minoxidil straight away and not to wait until its too late. It actually angers me when people say they dont want to take propecia because they cant be bothered taking a pill every day, how much effort does it take?! We waste enough time energy and health poisoning our bodies through smoke, alcohol or other means yet people cant be bothered to take a pill, please! sorry for the long post but i felt it had to be said.

Great post, Homer, and deeply felt. I hear you, too. But myself, well, it's not that I'm against taking a pill. Certainly I'm not so damned lazy as to avoid Propecia because I "can't be bothered to take a pill every day." Hell, I take my vitamins, and plenty of girlfriends I've had have taken birth control -- big whuppy shit. No problem, I agree.

I just worry about the side effect of becoming FLACCID in the dick, shlong, wang, penis, call it what you will. I like my John Thomas to work and given the choice between hair loss, which is NOT pathalogical, and impotency, which I'd rather not have to treat with Viagra or anything else, I'll take being a bald fucker, literally! icon_biggrin.gif

That said, I'd like to get on something like Propecia, which Arfy has strongly recommended I do. But could you or anyone get into detail about the risk(s) of side effects? I read that few guys experience any and that, if they do, by stopping the Propecia they are again able to function normally. But this is from the drug company itself -- and I just don't trust corporations to give me the straight facts.

Hey, I drink 12-year-old, single malt Scotch whiskey and grow my own dope -- so I feel pretty confident about my other poisons. I just worry about Propecia.

Any comments? icon_cool.gif

PRGuy:

I hear ya. It feels pathetic but it is an oh so real phenomenon:

For some men, hair matters a lot.

Definitely helps frame the face. Some faces just need hair up there to look right.

People here know I went with a conservative HT. But god, what a huge difference.

The main thing is my thinning top and RIDICULOUSly deep temporal recessions just in no way, shape, or form looked good with my face.

Fact of life.

My sides are thick, almost "bushy". Looked like shxt with thin top. Growing hair any longer than 3/4" was a joke. It looked stupid and I heard about it.

Now, the top has almost the same thickness as the sides and the deep temporal recessions are smoothed out quite a bit.

I can only tell you that those changes have affected the way people treat me when I first meet them in a positive way.

And sometimes, I still can't believe it.

But I don't need to lament on the "whys" of things that happen that are good for me. I only need to recognize them and be happy about them.

Don't sweat the infamous "sexual side-effects" of Propecia.

Let me ask you what is better: Don't try it and never know if it would work for you OR Try it and know for sure if it will or won't work for you?

Yeah, I too would rather be bald than have no libido. Balding guys still have sex (some just have to work a whole hell of a lot harder for it) but a man with no libido in his prime is hardly a man. Sorry, but it is true.

If you find out you are part of the 2% that has sexual side effects, then stop taking it.

You might find, like myself and at least one other poster, that your libido actually INCREASES.

Propecia is a DHT blocker and that means usually means more testosterone in your blood stream (Merck's own clinical study does state this). In a vast minority of men, that extra testosterone does some hokey stuff that actually leads to decreased sex drive.

But in general, more testosterone means better mood, higher sex drive, and better muscular development. And I can say that I have reaped those benefits to a mild degree.

It isn't a miracle drug, but it does some pretty cool things at least for some people.

You sound like you are a risk-taker. Starting Propecia is an absolute no-brainer for you. What do you have to lose that you can't get back by stopping treatment?

And like I said, at least you can say you tried and know FOR SURE how it works for you.

It is always better to know than to speculate in my book: Knowledge is Power.

If it helps - I've noticed no side-effects whatsoever, and I've been taking Propecia for over six months now.
