I am in the process of selecting a doctor for HT. I hope to do it at the end of June. Anybody out there knowledgeable about female HT. Can you recommend a good doctor for women? I live in NJ and my hair loss is mild. THANKS! Adele

Hi Adele

First I would make sure that you are actually a good candidate for a hair transplant... most women are not, from what I have heard. Women can have a diffuse hair loss all over their heads, while men typically retain a permanent "donor zone". If a woman gets a hair transplant and uses donor hair that eventually is lost, that is obviously a problem that you don't want. Make sure that your hair loss is something that isn't better treated with drug therapy, related to birth control you may be using, or other factors. Women can take some drugs to treat hair loss that men can't take, so make sure you have explored your other options first. A hair transplant should be considered a last resort, when medication is not effective.

There is not a lot of non-transplant info here, and also not a lot of information for women here. I would consider looking into the women's sections at www.hairlosshelp.com and www.thebaldtruth.com, and see if you can get any useful information there, perhaps in some previous posts.

There is also a doctor in New York (geoffery redmond) who specializes in women's hair loss, I hear he charges quite a bit for an office visit, but he also has his own forum at thebaldtruth.com which you may want to explore.

You might also consider meeting with Dr. Bernstein at the New hair Institute, he is a hair transplant surgeon and also a dermatologist, and he may be able to give you some useful advice. He is a straight shooter and will not try to talk you into a hair transplant, unlike some clinics.

Be careful and make sure that the surgery is right for you (and vice-versa) before you take that step... it is a committment, and something you can't undo.

There is some good general advice on hair transplants at www.hairtransplantadviser.org

Hi Adeleleo,

Most people who post to this website would not give you a "bum" steer. So, before you jump into HT surgery, give yourself plenty of time to consider the risks, and the efficacy of HT's for women. The above poster, Arfy, is correct that the matter of male baldness, which forms the basis for most HT theory and treatment, is a much different matter than female hair loss in most cases.

Now I'm not an expert, but based on what I've read many women who suffer hair loss suffer it as a result of some other problem. So, before I had surgery, I'd see a endocrinologist, a physician who specializes in disorders involving the glands and their effects on your body chemistry.

Another woman who posted here recently had HT surgery and became quite upset when she began to suffer "shock loss," which I understand is much more prevalent among female patients than male. She is now planning to see a female hairloss specialist. If you look around this site you'll see her posts.

Best of luck to you, but please save yourself the anguish of jumping into something without the benefit of maximum information.
