1. In this video, we demonstrate how Shapiro Medical performs the non shaven FUE. Grafts/hairs are selected, then the hairs trimmed 10-15 hairs at a time. These grafts will then be extracted before the next set of grafts are trimmed and extracted.

Depending where the grafts are placed, the patient usually leaves with no sign of having surgery. It's a time consuming technique. We like to do 500 grafts or less in a single day.

  2. Dr Paul vs Dr Ron...

Yes, Dr Ron initially taught Dr Paul but take into consideration

that its been 16years. By his own right, Dr Paul has come into his own. Dr Paul's patients are equally happy with their results as Dr Ron's patients. I believe Dr Paul has done more FUE and strip cases in the last 5 years compared to Dr Ron, therefore, we've been able to showcase more of Dr Paul's results.

Our clinic has attended almost all of the fue conferences and workshops, plus visit the top fue clinics in Europe and in the US. We feel our protocol and skills are every bit as good as other top clinics. We are in a unique position of offering one skilled physician to do the extracting while another physician is able to dedicate his skills to the recipient area.

Ultimately, the patient gets to decide which physician they want at SMG and most leave it to the availability of the physician because both of these physicians are considered to be world class.

  3. I met with Dr Ron Shapiro and Dr David Josephitis a few days ago, from what I understand they were given a grant to perform a study that will use FUT on side to create a hairline on my basically bald front third of my head, and FUE on the other side to compare and hopefully confirm there is basically no difference. I feel very comfortable going through with this being as Shapiro Medical is so highly regarded and Ron Shapiro is referred to as the hairline guru. Just wanted to let you guys know!

Congrats - looking forward to seeing the results of the study too!! :)

  4. wanted to start a new thread about 2 months Post Op care. Most of my scabs are now gone. There are no signs of transplant on my head, no pain either !! I am asking experts for the best practices for a fine growth. Specially I want to know -

    1) Should I treat grafted area normally for direct shower, swimming pool and walking bare head under the sun etc ?

    2) Which shampoo should be used on a daily basis ?

    3) Should we put any oil to cope up with dryness and itching ?

    4) Should I continue the use of Rogain ?

    5) Rubbing the fingers when it itches is harmful ? Will it affect the grafts inside ?

I know there is no one solution for everyone but still trying to collect some best practices.

Appreciate your time and faith ..

    Hi,

The following answers to your questions are what we inform our patients at Shapiro Medical:

    1) Yes, you can treat your scalp normally, however, we strongly advise to not get your scalp sunburned. You'd never want to sunburn any part of your body whether you've had a ht or not but since you had a ht, be especially careful to not burn your scalp. You can apply sunblock or wear a ball cap to avoid risk of sunburn.

    2) Any mild shampoo is fine.

    3) If your scalp is oily or itchy, use over the counter Nizoral shampoo 2-3 times a week for 3 weeks.

    4) If Rogaine foam isn't irritating your scalp, yes, continue to use it.

    5) Rubbing your scalp isn't going to harm the follicles inside but if you're rubbing the scalp vigorously while the fine hairs are starting to grow, you could cause the fine hairs to break off. If your scalp is itchy, refer to #3.

You'll be able to feel the growth with the pads of your fingers before you see the growth. Not too long before you get to the fun phases. Best of luck!!

  5.

@janna I started minoxidil for the first time 2.5 years ago for six months and then stopped. I started fin a year ago, and restarted minox about 8 months ago. I'll likely follow up with yours and other clinics for consultations, thank you for the response!

Good to hear you're back on hair loss preventative meds and consulting with trusted clinics to get their advice. Best of luck in your research!

  6. How long have you been on hair loss preventative meds? It wouldn't hurt to consult with several clinics to get their evaluation and recommendation. Some may recommend you to stay on meds only for now while others may recommend the conservative approach considering your donor supply. Best of luck!

  7. I'm in process of getting consults with the best docs- thank you all for this great forum. I've let my hair grow out from a 0 buzzcut. I'd like to know if you guys think I can be aggressive with my first HT? Front 1/3rd. Would be great to get a 60-70grafts/cm2 hairline.

Is this just wishful thinking? FYI I'll be 41yo in two weeks. Pics attached. Small scars in back of head from car accident, so I'll be going the FUT route.

Been on prophecies since I was 23 (1mg daily)

I'd advise against going for such an agressive density of 60/70 per cm2.

I believe there aren't too many top physicians who would consent to that.

You have native hairs in the frontal core,1500-2000 grafts in the thinning area should give you a good transformation, imo. Let us know what comes of your consultations.

  8. Hello Irhair,

Thanks for sharing your story. You are right, there are many who share your same experience. It does sound like you're on your way to finally restoring your hair properly. I like Dr DeVroye a lot. I'm confident you'll appreciate your results. 3000 grafts should help in achieving the result you seek where hair won't be on your mind all the time.

Heal well and best of luck!

  9. Ok here is some background. I am in my early 40's and have most of my hair. It's starting to recede and I was looking into this. I shot some pictures and sent them in to get an idea of the cost. I am in the Chicago area and they recomended around 1500 grafts FUE. I was a bit taken back by the pricing of around 14,000. So I have a few questions.

    1) what is the typical cost of 1500 follicles by FUE?

    2) what dr.s may be more reasonable that I can travel too?

    3) has there been any cases in which the hair falls out?

    4) how "permanent " is this?

After getting the price I would much rather buy a chevelle if this is the typical costs.

Thanks for your input in advance.

    Hi Jmt2005,

Shapiro Medical's FUE cost is $7 per graft minus $500 travel allowance so that will put you right around $10k for 1500 grafts.

Are you asking if transplanted hair fall out? It'd be very, very rare and probably due to skin disease. If you decide on hair restoration route, best wishes!

  10. You've been given some good advice here. I'm inclined to think 1500-2000 seem sufficient to address the frontal zone.

No doubt you'll get differing opinions and recommendations but with enough research you'll find the right physician who you'll trust to restore your hair.

Best wishes in your search. :)

  11. After 24+ years of working for a hair restoration clinic, Matt finally took the plunge to restore his

hairline and frontal 1/3rd with the Shapiro Medical team. Matt is very pleased with his result. Feel free to ask him any questions.

Matt kept a progress update on this thread:

  12. Find an ethical and competent doctor and see what he has to say.

    I echo above statement.

There are many choices in NYC so try to visit 4 or 5 clinics to get their recommendation. I would think if they practice both strip and fue well you're more likely to get their unbiased opinion as to which is better technique is better option for you.

  13. Orangehair,

This patient is healing up extremely fast. We love the Liposomal ATP spray for graft survival and post op healing.

When I visited Dr. Jean DeVroye's clinic last October he mentioned that Dr. True had just been there to try out his FUE extraction device. Dr. DeVroye's combination of blunt/sharp fue punches are incredible.

All the best to you at T&D in 2016!

  14. Question for the forum:

First: FUE is better than FUT (even for cases like me) IF the Dr. knows how to use ARTAS really well. He claims the low survival rates in FUE are Doctors doing this manually, as he says the robot is (1) more precise/gentle at extraction and (2) the robot lends a way to tell if the follicle is damaged in which case they don't implant them. He says he will only do FUT if a patient can't afford the higher cost of ARTAS FUE... Is this BS?

Second: When I asked which other Dr's he recommends for FUT, he said makes sure to find someone who uses the lateral slit technique using custom-cut blades. He recommended H&W, Alexander, and Feller (a bit strange that he recommended Feller given Feller's views on FUE, but so be it.). This Dr. DID NOT HOWEVER RECOMMEND Shapiro for FUT. I asked why. He thinks Shapiro doesn't use custom-cut blades but needles instead. Is this BS?

    Hi,

I'd like to address few of the comments you heard....

    1) "FUE is better than FUT" - Well, this depends on who you talk to. FUE eliminates the linear scar, however, it's not a scar less procedure like some clinics make out on their website. It's just a different kind of scars. As for the recipient area, the physician you talked to would have a hard time convincing anyone in the hair industry that FUE gets better yield. It can sometimes get just as close to FUT yield but there have been many instances where clinics have come short on delivering just as good yield. Clinics who do not have much experience in FUE are the main culprits of producing low FUE yield (this is true no matter the device - neograft, artas, manual, drills). Also, clinics who don't have much experience with FUT can produce low yield as well. So it comes down to which clinics continue r to produce natural, great results on a consistent basis year after year.

We've had first hand experience with the Artas for about a year and can attest that it's not more gentle on the grafts than manual punch unless you happen to be really, really bad at extracting. It is important to find a physician who is skilled and experienced in the technique you want.

    2) BS? Yes!! Shapiro Medical have used needles on few occasion but rarely. We've used custom cut blades for many, many years. We are also experienced in using lateral and sagittal incisions.

  15. Shapiro Medical is very pleased to present a patient who visited our clinic 2 years after his 4348 graft Strip procedure. Dr. Paul Shapiro was able to achieve this patient's goal to address all areas of his NW 5 hair loss pattern. Understandably, this patient is very happy with his result.

This patient's 6 Mos Progress was presented here:
