I'm scheduled for an FUT with a highly regarded surgeon this coming May. My surgeon recommended FUT saying he could get more bang for the buck/follicles/better result for the money. I'm starting to have second thoughts about whether I should do FUT or FUE. I like my sides and back relatively short and afraid I'll regret having the scar. Is this just jitters or has anyone who has had an FUT regret it and wished they had done an FUE?

From your previous post, you need 3500, which is a decent amount. The surgeon will most likely get more and you really do need to go FUT to maximize your graft count.

What's your situation? Any pics to share to see your NW level etc? Some people might really need to go FUT first to maximise grafts, but it's not necessary for most; many top doctors have come out in recent times and unequivocally stated that FUT is no longer superior to FUE in any way, such as Hasson in his most recent interview with Melvin, and has even said that he much prefers FUE now and gets better results with this method at this point.

Personally, I would never get FUT due to the scar, if you like to wear your hair short then yes you'll probably regret the scar. If you really don't need FUT and you're just consulting with a surgeon who is very pro FUT, such as someone like Bloxham, for the sake of it and this has pigeonholed you into accepting, then I would reconsider.

Honestly the only time you can really see a fut scar is when you literally shave your head. You can get away with wearing your hair short and doing a lower taper fade if you're worried.

Are you on any blood pressure medication, blood thinners, or something like Lipitor to lower cholesterol? Some of those and other medications can cause hair loss, so if you are on those post hair transplant I think there could be a higher graft failure rate. I would seriously take a look at any medications you are on before going through another hair transplant.

To my understanding blood pressure medication helps with hair growth as it increases vasodilation increasing blood flow everywhere including dermal papilla cells.

Best of luck getting any help from Dr Cinik after surgery. It's farsical to be honest.

I've been providing progress pics since surgery a month ago and sent that yesterday asking for advice and the response was "what happened". I said look at all earlier pics and then they responded saying it's normal and as a result of swelling.

I have asked for someone to call me several times but just get ignored. It's disgraceful aftercare to be honest.

sorry you're going through that keep trying

As of yesterday this is how it looks. It has taken a long time to get here. Just wondering why this happened and if there will be any long term issues where skin is red/damaged.

Have tried asking clinic but that's a complete waste of time. Aftercare is non existent.

to be honest that doesnt look like scabs it does look like roughly 4-5 pimples with irritation around them and should be addressed with your HT surgeon

After much deliberation, I've made the decision to go with Dr. Haber in Cleveland, OH. I've scheduled my FUE procedure for February 22nd, 2022, and I was quoted at 1600 grafts (virtual appointment) at $7 per graft. I mentioned shooting up to 2000 grafts and I plan on reassessing the graft count when I go for my appointment next month. I have every intention of getting more grafts to hopefully provide a denser hairline and restoration.

I had consults with LA FUE Clinic, Dr. Diep, Dr. Haber, and spoke with Dr. Konior through email. LA FUE Clinic was very professional and informative, however, I decided to go with a known and recommended doctor, which is why I chose a consult with Dr. Diep. Dr. Diep's office 'lost' or 'forgot' to put me on the schedule TWICE, and finally got me in for a consult after waiting longer than I was originally told. Professionalism in the office translates well to doctor expectations and professionalism, in my opinion, so I had low expectations with the consult. Dr. Diep, although kind, seemed impatient and rushed with the questions I asked. I understand that his schedule is VERY busy, and his work is allegedly among the top in the US, however, I could tell from his demeanor that he wasn't the correct fit for me (let's hope I don't choke on these words!). As I said, I understand he's very busy and perhaps it was just my own inability to accept the prior mistakes made by office staff and frustrations associated with that - that lead me to this thought process and conclusion with Dr. Diep. The consultation process and consult wasn't what I was hoping for in Dr. Diep, especially since he comes so highly regarded, so I decided to consult with Dr. Haber and Dr. Konior. Dr. Konior and I spoke over email and he was very courteous and kind in providing me with detailed prices and information regarding my potential procedure. I liked Dr. Konior, however, his prices were a bit much for me at $28,000 for 2000 grafts. Doreen and Linda with Dr. Haber's office were extremely helpful and professional and gave me everything I needed and more. I had my consult with Dr. Haber and he seemed more than competent and knowledgable, as well as patient and informative, which is why I decided to go with him. While the results provided on the internet aren't as highly visible or easy to find as Dr. Diep, I'm hopeful for this procedure. I'll give an honest update on the before, during, and after results once I have the procedure. Please wish me luck! I'm nervous and scared, yet excited.

My biggest fear is my donor area healing correctly/being over-harvested and I'm worried about having wiry hair in the replacement area once completed. Thoughts on this? Thanks again for everything.

Congrats on the decision. While i agree with you that it's nice to have professional, courteous, unrushed surgeon to work on me, I honestly care more about results. Also it looks like Dr. Haber doesn't strictly do hair transplants, but does general dermatology. I'm not saying that makes him a subpar hair transplant surgeon, but wouldn't you want to go to someone that limits their practice to hair transplants? Kind of like going to a general dentist that mostly does fillings and crowns, but you go to them for a root canal. Hope the best for you regardless.

Really sorry that this has happened to you.

I had a failed procedure to begin with, and then two FUE at ~1500 each from Konior to fix my issue.  The concerning part is that the graft count from Diep is pretty high, my failure was ~1500.

Clearly I would not return to the original clinic, as others have said get a consultation with elites like H&W and Konior etc. to see what they think.

As an actual patient that had almost no growth in a failed procedure and then GREAT results in two follow ups, I am always very, very, very skeptical of the “bad individual physiology” excuses that clinics and others use.

Sorry again that this has happened, but get a few consults and see how many grafts you have left and I bet you will be happy eventually.

curious as to why it took two additional fue transplants after your failed transplant to fix the issue? i know konior is great but why not one transplant at 3000 grafts versus the two transplants he had to do? did the first one not look great (possibly considered a failure) or was that his plan to go for two transplants? what's the rationale behind it?

Diep is terrible. he is NOT elite and should not be mentioned in the same circles as elite.

the lack of accountability post op just compounds the problem. Office staff is inexperienced, seems like bunch of young high school girls trying to manage a medical clinic. He sedates you heavily so you have no idea what is going on.

it’s shameful he is asking you to pay for more grafts when the procedure he performed was an utter failure. doesn’t matter anyway I would not want him touching my scalp after that result; so the point is moot,  but any surgeon worth his salt would want to correct such a botched job for free sort of a second chance to prove himself.

There is nothing you can do to change the past. Post the reviews on google and Yelp if the office is not agreeing to the refund. Heck post even if they do refund you. Don’t sign anything.

you have one shot to fix it. Do your home work very carefully.

Just curious did you have a HT with Diep. only reason i ask is your specifics about his office and HT process

Ok I have recently became aware of this forum and wanted to share my experience that would hopefully inform others going forward.

I had an FUT surgery with Dr. Diep in Sep 2018 with a ~4000 graft count.

    Initial consultations:

Dr. Diep was very helpful and was answering all questions I had during my consultations. I was reluctant between doing an FUT vs FUE, but given the extent of hair loss I had endured, Dr. Diep recommended that I go with an FUT, and I decided to go with it too. Dr Diep recommended doing all these scalp stretching exercises prior to my surgery which would be about 3 months after the consultation. However, since I was doing a bit of research before hand, something took me aback. In the consultations, I felt there wasn't enough care or examination done to my specific case. I was given the freedom of choosing how many grafts I wanted which seemed a bit odd to me. How would I know how much grafts can be extracted using an FUT If I don't know the density and elasticity of my scalp. I don't want to have a big piece taken if that meant the elasticity of my skin didn't allow for it and that I would have a stretching scar later on. You would think there is some procedure to figure that out. But anyhow, he is the expert, so I went with a 4000 for my case (5000 grafts was also offered).

    Here is a before pic:

    Surgery day:

Ofcourse don't remember much of it, but it went fine and by the end of, there were an extra ~300 grafts extracted so an added $$$$ (which in fairness was agreed to before surgery anyway). Took a couple of pics right after when I arrived home:

     4 days post surgery:

Eventhough I was following all instructions, there was a lot of scabbing and blood coagulation forming over the frontal part mainly. Hey I guess I have a super bleedy head.

    Week and half post

Scabs had fallen off but at that point I think there was some type of infection that maybe if attended to before wouldn't have affected the hair follicles later on.

    Post_surgery_5.thumb.jpg.b9fddcecb0e9d45086f510b0559f9daa.jpg

2 and half weeks post surgery

This is when I was given an appointment to go back to see the Dr and remove the sutures. When he saw me, he immediately prescribed me topical anti bacterial medication but I think at that point it might have been a bit late (looking at results now). After that the nurse helped me remove the sutures which seemed like it was a bit early in my case as the wound from the FUT seemed like it hadn't healed fully. Reason being is that there was also lots of scabbing over the wound (which delayed its healing I think).

    1 year post surgery

Hair had grown in and looking better in general for sure, but I dont think the survival rate was high for the follicles given what I described earlier. Also, the scarring is massive and I really have to wear my hair in the back a bit longer to cover.

    Post_surgery_9.thumb.jpg.75d8afba34efcb6587151d1596f81b41.jpg

But under the sun is worse:

    Post_surgery_6.jpg.d9c0f53dabc8feefa6717cd3597b82d6.jpg

    And here is the scar:

    Conclusion

Overall I am not satisfied with the results for both the donor and recipient areas. I don't think my case was handled with care and some mistakes were made along the way. I am now looking to revise the scar in the back and for recommendations on other surgeons around the west coast area that have a demonstrated record. My thoughts are:

    • The followup was 2.5 weeks after surgery during which I had developed lots of scabbing that hindered the growth of the hair in the recipient area and the healing of the scar in the donor area. I was not instructed really in detail as to how to handle this situation since at that point I didnt know much and I thought this was normal.
    • Removal of sutures might have been a bit early too as the wound was still almost fresh!
    • The FUT strip might have been too wide for my specific case (not sure), but I felt like there was not enough care taken about figuring out my specifics (density of hair, elasticity, etc ...)
    • The survival rate for those hair follicles implanted in the front was low and as seen in the pic under the sun they are very sparse. I would have thought with 4000+ grafts, at least the frontal part would look thick but that pic under the sun tells the whole story. I think maybe if I was instructed to take the topical earlier, maybe that would have helped?

Anyhow, this is my experience. Maybe I am one of the unlucky ones that even if everything was done properly and correctly, my scalp and biology just didn't work in my favor.

Have you tried contacting Dr. Diep's office for a repair? How else was your post op care? Do you have significant medical issues? Have you seen a dermatologist for any skin conditions?

i've been taking Dut daily for 2.5 years with zero sides. Before that I was on Fin for 2 years, also with zero sides.

I haven't seen any additional hairloss since started Fin, but still wanted to go up to Dut since its the best med out there.

Did you notice a gain in hair with Dut? my HT surgeon recommended i take dut 1 day a week and continue finasteride the other 6 days.

Sorry I may have posted twice. I tend to recommend the foam because absorption is better and less irritating. However, you can use the liquid but I would personally prefer to delay until 3-4 weeks after surgery to avoid irritating the scalp.

Do you place the foam in all areas of the scalp including the transplanted area?

    Hi!

    36 y.o

    I think I am a Norwood 6.  Lost my hair when I was around 20 y.o.

Don't know if I have much more hair to lose at this point.

Never really took any medication or anything for my hair loss as the sides are just too scary. Did a small 3-4 week period with Mixoydl but I got extremely flaky skin to the point it was embarrassing to go to work as it looked like severe dandruff so stopped that.

Am comfortable as a badlie and do a full blade shave every morning however I know I will look much better with hair.

Would consider an FUE in the future and would continue shaving my hair for the entire first year post-op.

Have read good things about Dr. Pekiner in Ankara, Turkey and would probably go with him.

    Any opinions?

Due to a large amount of grafts needed (+5000) fue really shouldn't be the first option, you need a fut and possibly another procedure after that.

    Hi All,

After much discussion with my father and then doctor, I went on Finasteride Propecia in early June 2021. After watching the youtube  show 'Hairloss Show', I decided to go on it 3x week.

I went on it after my hairline appeared to be getting even  worse.

I am terrified now and turn 18 next week.

    Pictures are attached.

I am going to increase my dosage to daily (no side effects at all) due to thinking I  might be an outlier . I am tempted to add Dutasteride once a week or Minoxidil (though reluctant to do so as it seems a chore)

My hairline has got worse from my initial pictures I posted, and now I have uploaded shots from  January 2021, August 2021 (6 weeks approx after starting Finasteride), and from yesterday Xmas eve.

Please give your honest opinion, and I recognise it's only an opinion and not medical advice.

Hey man i'm not saying this in any negative way but you really should check with a therapist on this. You might get better help talking it through with a professional like that, especially with virtually no hair loss and you being very young. I believe the root of your problem is deeper than physical appearance.

I was in the gym on day 8 or so. Resistance only, no sweating.

After 2 weeks and all my scabs were off, it's was back to normal for me. But still, light sweating.

Ok good to know. From your previous HT it looks like you had FUE, which makes sense for you to be working out that soon. I was asking specifically for FUT patients, no worries.
