Think of all the truly embarrassing stuff people go in for. Doctors would have seen it all and this would be nothing to them!

So I just went to the Chemist with my prescription and I got given some generic brand called Finasta... has anyone heard of it? It is 5mg Finasteride. I really hope it works the same as Proscar!

Really? That seems strange that they said it was illegal to give to you. My friend is taking it and he went to a different doctor as well. I went to a doctor in north west of Melbourne. Where were the doctors that you went to?

I just got a prescription for Proscar and the doctor said that splitting the tablet shouldn't be a problem at all.

Hi everyone, I only joined the forums recently and asked a few questions about proscar. I've been to the doctor and got a prescription for it for 1.25 mg per day. My question is about the shedding. I've read a lot of posts about people shedding some hair not long after they start taking it. I am going on holidays in about 6 weeks and had a few questions. - How bad is the shedding? Is it actually visible in that you will look like you have less hair? - How long after you begin treatement does it generally occur? - Do you think I should wait until after my holiday in 6 weeks? I don't want to be overseas with my hair looking thinner from the proscar Thanks.

Go to your GP and tell them you are balding and mention finasteride. She told me there are some possible side effects that effect are very small amount of people and asked if I am willing to risk that. I said yes and that was it. I haven't started taking it yet as I'm going overseas in October and have heard it can cause some shedding at the start. I'd rather this happen when I was in Australia than ruin my holiday. Can anyone tell me how bad the shedding can be? And at one point it happens? I am going overseas in 6 weeks... Yes I am from Melbourne.

Geez, I wish i was 36. I'm only 26! It's not too bad at the moment, especially when my hair is at a nice length that isn't too short or too long. Anyway, just got back from the doctor and told her about it. She knew about finasteride and looked it up on her computer. I told her about Proscar rather than Propecia because it's the same thing but in 5mg tablets rather than 1. She gave me a prescription for Proscar. I have to split the tablets into 4 and take a quarter each day and skip the 5th day if I want seeing as you only need 1mg per day. I'm going overseas in a month and a half for a couple of weeks so am going to wait till I get back from there before starting on it.

I emailed one of those online pharmacies and they said they don't ship to Australia because of some laws. I'm guessing they would all be like that if it's because of Australian law. Steak, I haven't been to the doctor yet but am going on Wednesday. $16,500 is serious cash for a transplant, especially if you will need more done in the future

Hi Steak, It is expensive. I posted another thread in this forum about Proscar. It seems on that same site you can get 30 5mg proscar tablets for only 90 bucks. From reading the forum I get the impression you can split them into 5, so they are like 1mg propecia. This would be very reasonably priced. I haven't looked into the transplant yet, I don't think I'm quite to that stage but will be there in a year or something. I've looked at a few of their sites including nation hair institute. Unfortunately it seems to cost a lot more than 7 grand... "During the consultation, you will be informed as to the number of grafts that could be removed and the ultimate cost of the procedure. Are you aware of any Australian forums on hair loss? I think 66% of men regrow some hair on Propecia mainly around the crown. And once you have visited the doctor. I am visiting the doctor on Wednesday but I'm almost certain she knows nothing about Propecia so hopefully she refers me to someone.

Hi everyone, I'm 26 year old and my hair loss started very gradually around 22 or 23. I was in denial because my dad didn't start getting thin till around 40 and my mum's father was still getting haircuts when he was 100! It's been starting to get to me a bit lately and I can't stop thinking about it. Anyway, I had always seen those ads on Australian tv late at night like advanced hair but they always seemed slightly dodgy. My hair hasn't gotten too bad just yet, it's receded a bit and thinned in the middle and front, the crown has gotten a bit thin so in bright light it looks like a bald spot. Recently I read about finasteride and it sounds like it truly does have a benefit for a lot of people. Even if it doesn't thicken the hair, hopefully it will keep what I've got. I'm seeing the doctor on Wednesday for something else but am going to ask her. Last time I asked her she didn't seem to have much idea about hair loss and just told me about regaine. So I'm not sure if she will prescribe finasteride, hopefully she can refer me to a dermatologist or something. Sorry about the long post, on to the questions. - The online chemist in Australia sells 28 pills of 1mg propecia for $65. This would end up costing about $800 a year which I'm not sure I can afford on something like this. Proscar is $94 for 30 5mg tablets. Is it ok to buy that and split them into 5? That would be affordable. - When you get a hair transplant, if finasteride doesn't work for you and your original hair keeps falling out, do you have to continue forking out for more transplants as the other hair falls out? Also, anyone get any advice for me? Thanks very much.

Be looking at $65 a month. I know you need a prescription to get it but will a regular GP give you something like that? Or do you have to see a specialist?
