  1. Rich,

Many characteristics including poor donor supply (low density), diffuse pattern thinning over entire scalp (including donor), age, hair type.

This list is not exhaustive by any means.

To put your mind at ease why not go for a consultation with a Doc. They will give you it straight. I would advise seeing a Doc face to face rather than a representative in this case.

What makes you think that you may fall into the 'unsuitable category'?

    What is your situation Rich?

    All the best,

    Jess

I made a thread, please check it out and comment there for me!

  3. Also, I am not currently taking any meds and have had no consultations, however I did message Dr Path and am awaiting his suggestions, as well as all of yours :)

If taking propecia or Rogaine may buy me a few years before a HT, then thats cool.

I do use DermMatch concealer on the sides where my temples are thin, to add the illusion of density, when my hair is shorter and difficult however

  4. Hey. I've been a member of this forum for several months now, asking various questions and having viewed 100s of HT blogs, I'm certain that I will be getting a Hair Transplant at some point in the future.

    About me:

I'm currently 21 1/2, and have always had considerably bad hair, in that its quite thin, kinky, and sparse in places (mainly the left side, above my ear, but also all over) as well as this, I've always had somewhat of a high hairline, and a largeish forehead, even looking bad at pictures as a child, I would never look that great with short hair, and always better sporting a fringe/bangs as aposed to having haired styled upwards.

I have always been very obsessed with my hair, but have come to terms with what I am, and also what I can expect from surgery, so, I may as well take the plunge and have the operations I want, right?

Anyways, I noticed what I originally thought was hairloss at around the age of 15, however this was just how my hair parts in the centre of the hairline, and has always been like that ( see photos ), it wasnt until 19 that I really noticed hairloss, but its been a slow process...

originally my temples receded, and I would imagine they wouldn't recede anymore, the next thing to be happening however is my hairline seems to be thinning out at the sides, more so on my right than the left..

I have been taking monthly or so photo updates to monitor the hairloss, and If I'm honest with myself, it does seem a little thinner on the right side now than It did back in Feb 2011.

I also seem to have inherited my mothers hair, as she has hair of a very similar style to mine, thin, sparse and frankly, crap, where as my fathers hair is very thick and great. All of the males on my mothers side have generally a full head of hair, which is reassuring, and I seem to be following the same sort of recession as my moms father, however my own father has suffered from some hair loss, but that didn't start until he was aprox 33 years old. he is now 53, and honestly, he is looking into having a HT himself, but I am certain he will have great results as he has only lost hair on the imediate top and there are still hairs present throughout that area and even on his hairline.

So, thats a bit of a back story, generally a good family history for hair, at least on my mothers side, but my fathers hairloss is definitely not the worst case scenario when you look at HT options...

Myself? Well I'm sort of at terms with it, but at times I feel really shitty if I can't conceal it, after a bad haircut or something..I'm also anxious to see how much more hair I will lose and in how much time it will take to happen. I can only really take advice from people here, and wait it out until I say enough is enough, but thats what the planning and research is about.

Enough Ranting, heres some photos from a few days back, directly after showering, with my hair wet and combed back:

(Note, my hairline has always been high, and never been directly straight across, the main hairloss you should really note is at the temple areas:)

Heres a few photos of my hair, having just been dried and how I would wear it normally, as due to large forehead, having my hair as it is in the above photos wouldnt look as good:

Well thats pretty much it for now, I guess I could upload some pictures of my fathers hair and grandfathers for reference but, more importantly I just wanted to hear some feedback before i start planning and looking into the HT future...

Am I a lot more worried than I should be, at this point in my 21 YO life? or Is this definitely signs of something?

    Thanks

  5. I see this quite often 'Some people may be suitable for hair transplants/may not be'

    What does that mean?

When is a person not a good candidate? obviously, if they have so little donor hair left, but besides that, what other reasons makes a person not suitable?

I'm just worried I'd fall under that category

  6. One paper said he was there for 2 days, 8 hrs each, so i dont know mybe 2500?, but others have said 1 day. Maybe he might come out and say, i dont know. I do Know one thing though, he aint going to require any hair gel in a few months like he thinks. Or doing any shampoo adverts like that twat ferdinand says he should do.

They were joking, chill out

  7. One the one hand I want to applaud him for being so transparent and unashamed about it. On the other, it seems like hubris. He's gotten an HT from a place with a bad reputation and I doubt he's gotten approval from Man Utd staff to go on Propecia or Rogaine. His progress (regress?) will now be visible to the public in full-color and high-definition during each week's game. Interesting to see if he'll need to visit another surgeon in 3-5 years, and how proud and transparent he'll be about that when the time comes.

Actually he was on Propecia for years before having the HT. I actually am really excited to see how his surgery develops, and hopefully he will grow his hair a little longer in months to come. If it wasn't for Rooney doing this, I would have never started researching HTs and definitely wouldn't have found this community.

I must say though, his hair seems to be growing back pretty fast, it's only been like 2 months, if that :S

  8. Just wondering if anybody has any other cosmetic communities that they could share with me?

I am currently looking into having surgery on my eye lid, need to be consulted first as it may not be, but I believe i am suffering from 'Ptosis' on the left eye (did not have it in any of my infancy years, only noticable in photographs of the past 5 years / also my dadseems to have the same thing, meaning it is most likely genetically acquired?)

as well as this, i hate the fuck out of my nose and wouldnt mind having that sorted some time down the road.

I know i probably sound like a freak who is going to end up looking like Michael Jackson, but I seriously am not jumping to rash conclusions here, and was dealt some unfortunate cards in the turnover of puberty. Considering this year my research time and hopefully I can decide what is best to do. :)

  9. Considering using Rogaine to see if it can help regrow or thicken the hairs on my temples/side of my head, possibly improving the hairline also.

I'm not comfortable with the idea of signing my life away to taking Propecia forever, as it has some side effects as well as many people saying it will only work for so many years.

My question is: Is Rogaine something that will stop working after so many years? or can it stabilize hairloss for life, if used every day?

If I can hold off hairloss before, and even after having a HT with the use of rogaine solely, then it may be the best thing for me.

  10. The near-future cure is cloning. cloning = unlimited donor supply

Beyond that I imagine there will be breakthroughs in preventive treatment, along the lines of an improved-Propecia.

Yeah, thats the cure that every man on the planet would be hoping for, and its obviously possible.. but how soon?

The story in the OP says that German doctors were successful in doing so last year, so does that mean it will be within a few years, or will we just never hear of this again? :/

  11. My problem is that, my donor hair isn't that great... my hair isnt that dense as it is, and it may prove pretty hard for me to get good coverage or a result id be happy with, BHFUE is not something im happy to do either as it looks pretty stupid, i guess unless its being used to fill in the gaps in any patchy areas.

And that's why I'm really hoping on some sort of follicle cloning, as I really feel I need more hair

  12. I was doing some reading and came across this article, several years back, no doubt many of you have seen this at some stage:

(Can't find the article, but its described on wikipedia) :

"In May 2007, researchers at the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Pennsylvania unveiled a new scientific breakthrough that may cure baldness with stem cells. A product could be on the market within three years.[35][36] The researchers discovered that the growth of new hair producing follicles could be stimulated in mice by damaging their skin.[37]"

This was years back, and still no advances? Another relatively new article that gives hope:

"In December 2010, scientists at the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Technical_University in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany revealed they have grown the world's first artificial hair follicles from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stem_cells'>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stem_cells.'>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stem_cells. Research leader Dr Roland Lauster said within five years millions of hair-loss sufferers could grow new hair from their own stem cells and have it implanted into their bald spots. He also announced that preparations for clinical trials were "already in motion".[42]

I guess my questions are, how often do these type of 'complete miracle cure/scientific breakthrough' stories come up, and also how likely is it that we will see a universal fix to baldness in our lifetimes, nay, the next 5-10 years? Both stories use words like 'may have' 'within years to come' 'should' 'could' etc, and whilst this is nice, it's nothing until it becomes a reality. surely if "they have grown the world's first artificial hair follicles from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stem_cells" is true, then we will DEFINITELY be seeing this in practice very very soon, right?

  13. I just wanted to add that if you have BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder), you may want to take periodic pictures of your hairline every few months. It will give you an objective view of your hair's progression. When you have evidence of what your hair is actually doing, you might be able to lower the stress of guessing if you're balding or not. Let the camera worry about it, not you.

And check on this forum how people photograph their hair. There's an art to it.

Thanks for the input, I have been doing this for around 6 months now, I wish I had started doing it sooner. Currently I'd say nothing to worry about, but i have episodes (my hair is pretty shit as it is/hairline also) where I feel like im losing my hair and its really obvious to everybody who sees.

I guess bad haircuts are to blame, I had one a few months back and that really tormented me for a good few months until now, now its grown out.

FML, I wish I didn't care about hair, haha

  14. Hey, im new here. 21 years old and though I'm not losing my hair (yet?) I've always been a worrier of losing it, due to suffering from BDD.. And generally having shitty thin hair. I've been doing research to Deal with things as and when they happen.

One question I need to ask as I don't understand, do the donor hairs that are removed to be transplanted grow back? Or are they moved from one zone of the hea to another?
