  1. I'm convinced there's a difference in the effectiveness of foam vs liquid for anyone who responds to minoxidil at all. Maybe it's in the delivery mechanism. I also had an endless supply of dandruff and itchy scalp while on the generic minox. It went away within a couple of weeks after switching to the foam.
  2. Here's my experience: I was using foam just a little over a year ago with great results. After a while I changed to the generic minoxidil for budget reasons. I started slowly losing what I gained. Six weeks ago I changed to the foam again and shed a lot almost immediately. Now I'm seeing signs of regrowth. I got a haircut yesterday and it looks fuller than my last haircut.
  3. For about 6 months straight, I've used the generic Minoxidil liquid and just changed to the foam 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately, it caused immediate shedding and noticed how much thinner it made my hair look after two days. It's still thinner though I think the shedding may have subsided. Anyone else experience this? The one positive thing is the massive dandruff I had while using the liquid stopped. For months, flakes were everwhere when I'd comb and I tried Tea Trea Oil, Aloe Gel, Nizoral 1% and nothing would counter it. Now that I stopped using the liquid and started the foam, it's almost non-existant.
  4. Is there that much more of a difference in absorption between the two? I've been using the generic minox for months with ok results. A couple of nights ago, I switched to the foam my hair looks markedly thinner. Literally, friday night it looked thicker than it does now. This normal?

  6. I was going through a thin phase over the last few months. I wasn't sure if it had to do with the seasons or some other cause. I'm still shedding a lot but after a haircut, seems like the hair roots are beginning to look darker and seeing less scalp. Also, I've been using Finasteride for a couple of years and Minox twice a day since April of last year.

  8. I'm assuming your surgery was Dec 2, 2008 and not Feb 12, 2008? Otherwise your results should be apparant by now.
  9. I've been told that BHT can be good for adding a little underbrush among the trees.
  10. Ive noticed more shedding in the last couple of months when I wash my hair in the sink. The hairs in the sink don't look like miniaturized hairs either. Is there more active hairs in the telogen phase during certain times of the year than others? I thought the human hair cycles were more asynchronous than say dogs. I remember being in a similar situation this time of year last year.

  12. After a hair transplant with Dr Reed in La Jolla, CA two years ago and 4 months diligent use of Finasteride and Minoxidil, I finally felt like my hair has improved to the point that I don't need Toppik anymore! Just to give you a little backround, I spent the 5 years prior to my transplant using Toppik religiously everytime I was seen in public. Both Toppik and Couvre. While the stuff helps, you sort of become a slave to it once you start. So fast forward to the last couple of years, I eventually got a hair transplant and gradually used less of it as the results grew in but still wasn't ready to cast it out entirely. Also, I wasn't very consistent with the meds, Minox and Finasteride. However, I decided to change that for the last 4 months. Twice a day, every day. Now, it's thickened up so much, when I went to visit my mom last week after not seeing her in nearly a year, she asked if I had another transplant. I told her no. Anyway, I'm not sure if the magic combo works the same for everyone but its unmistakenly improved my hair a great deal.

  14. I was curious about bht at one point. I've only heard that it can be a good compliment to a strip or FUE but not a reliable substitute because of the difference in hair quality. It would be like adding underbrush to the trees but not making a replacement for the trees.... if that makes sence.
  15. I was also using the Rogaine foam but discontinued it's use because I noticed it having an adverse effect and some shedding, not to mention itchiness. The Proscar seems to be doing wonders by itself because when I stopped the Rogaine, my hair thickened up. I don't know if the regular Rogaine/Minox will have a different effect but I'm actually afraid to touch the stuff now. I was told that Finasteride continues to thicken up the hair up to two years and then beyong that it's maintanance. So far I'm just under one year and continue to see growth. I'm considering postponing my second transplant just because I think more growth could come from the medicine use.
  16. Ok, probably not everyone will experience these results but here goes: I got a transplant done from Dr Reed in San Diego back in the Summer of 06' and have seen impressive results. Beyond the surgery, I've been taking finasteride religiously for just under a year now. I considered another hair transplant session and went to see him 4 months ago for an assesment. He admitted that I was a good responder to Finasteride and could see hair regrowth where he didn't transplant it. That was with about 6 months on the program. I took his advice and postponed getting another session till I see what more could come from the Finasteride treatment. So now it's February and I've noticed some more growth in the frontal area appearing. It's literally in front of where he plotted out one of the temple angles during my transplant and has progressed for a few months. It could thicken up more in a few months for all I know? I didn't expect any miracles from the medicine but apparantly it's working more than I bargained for. Has anyone else experienced this?

  18. I recieved 1900 grafts from Dr Reed in La Jolla, CA back in July 06'. After getting a great transplant from him, I immediately started taking Proscar, cut into quarters for about the first 4 months. I had some very solid growth during that time period. However, I made the mistake of discontinuing the Proscar after my initial prescription ran out and once I achieved a satisfactory result. This led to considerable thinning over the next several months (even though the transplanted hair remained). I then got back on Proscar back in April of this year and the hair rebounded within a few months. So recently this month, I had another consultation with Dr Reed in order to assess what I could use for another session. My hair thinning pattern before any surgery was similar to Jack Nicholson's pattern from the movie '5 easy pieces' (1970).... thinning along the temples, top and sides. Now, I've got considerable coverage but wet and combed back reveals some scalp seethrough. he analyzed my scalp and feels like there's room for another 1500 grafts. He showed me some photo's of my surgery day and noticed new growth near the back where he didn't transplant the hair and thinks I'm a good responder to Finasteride. He suggested that I might want to delay having another session because more time on the Proscar may do much of the work I'm after. I've only been on it for 6 months and he said it takes about 2 years for Proscar to have it's maximum effect. He also said he noticed some other baby hairs in my scalp that he'd expect to thicken up. I understand his practical estimate. The trade-off is time vs grafts. Who else experienced similar??

  20. Congrats on choosing Dr Reed Wingnut. I got 1900 from him back in July 06' and don't regret my decision. In fact, I was in his office the day before you got your surgery and we discussed the possibility of round 2.
  21. Since I haven't seen many posts about Dr Reed on these forums, I though I should chime in. I just got a year under my belt from a HT with Dr Reed who transplanted just under 1900 grafts. My history: Basically, I started thinning diffusely in my late 20's in the temple regions which then became a general thinning pattern all around the the top of my head. After age 31 or 32, it seemed to have stabilized and didn't progress much further. Last year was my first HT ever at age 39... now 40. Although I feel like I could benefit from a second procedure, I can't say enough about how much of an improvement the first one made and definitely got my moneys worth. The hair all around has thickened up a lot and is growing in a good direction. The scar is very clean and barely noticeable whenever I buzz my hair to a #3. He recommended getting on Finasteride and Minoxidil at the time and I got rapid regrowth at around the 3rd and 4th month... even the 2nd month made a difference but maybe it had something to do with the fact that I'm a fast healer. The months beyond that progressed slower but has steadily improved and matured in a years time. Admittedly, I'm more consistent with taking finasteride than I am with minoxidil. I'm in the proceedings right now of getting another HT this fall to touch up some areas and add even more density. I'm driving down to SD soon for another consultation with him. Prior to my HT, I was using concealers such as Toppik (which works ok I guess) but it's messy and who wants to be a slave to that routine forever?? I use much less of it now than before but would eventually like to phase it out completely. I'm surprized there are not others from him who posted about their experience ... except one other person who's new and has pending results.
