Hi all, Wanted to share a review of a recent study, the first ever to attempt to measure the effect of a hair transplant on other people's perceptions of the recipient. Here is a brief synopsis: A recently published study is the first to measure the perceived benefit of hair transplantation on a patient’s age, attractiveness, successfulness, and approachability – key factors that play an important role in workplace and social success. The pilot study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Facial Plastic Surgery , found that hair transplant recipients were perceived by others to be 3.6 years younger following their hair restoration surgery. The data indicate that the person’s attractiveness, successfulness, and approachability also showed statistically significant positive changes as a result of hair restoration surgery. He had two sessions totaling 3,038 follicular unit grafts. Several years later HYC came in for a third hair transplant of an additional 1,252 grafts for a total of 4,290 grafts over three sessions. Hi Rusty, This is an excellent question. You are correct, widened scars can be improved in two ways: they can be re-excised to make the scar finer, or hair can be placed into the scar to make it less visible. If the scar has thickened (called a hypertrophic scar), transplanted hair won’t grow in it until it is made thinner. This can be accomplished with injections of cortisone directly into the scar. It often takes a series of 2-3 injections spaced at least a month apart to sufficiently flatten a scar so that it can receive grafts . Once the scar is thinned, hair obtained through FUE may be transplanted into the scar. You can read more about this topic on my blog: What are Options for Fixing Wide Donor Scars?
