Hi guys, i have been reading a lot of your posts lately.Obviously it all started coz i have been losing good amount of hair since the past year. Its become noticable now on my crown. After doing a lot of reading on the subject of MPB i finally decided to risk taking finasteride. As i hail from India i could not lay my hands on propecia but am using Finax instead, which is its generic equivalent. Now,i have been taking this pill religiously for the past 60 days but the hair continues to fall at the same rate or probably more. i have read about shedding and all that but i cannot figure out if its shedding due to the pill or my regular hair fall.I am not facing any sides till now but their is no improvement on the hair front either.I have read that it takes upto 3 to 6 months for fin to work but at least there should be some signs of improvemet as far as the hair fall is concerned. All i need is some realistic feedback on what i should expect at this stage and also would love to hear from someone who has been taking Finax and has something to say about it.You are all a great bunch of pple out ther

It doesn't just take 3-6 months.

It can often take 6, 8, or 12 months to really see whether it's doing something for your hair. The hairs that are being affected by the drug are sometimes kicked into their "resting" phase when you start using the drug. So those hairs will take a few months before they even sprout again.

If you're not getting side effects, don't quit the drugs until you've given the drug a year to work.

Thanks for the prompt reply calvin. Its just that one gets a little paranoid seeing hair falling everywhere.Anyways ur reply gives me some hope to continue with the drug. The thought of having a bald patch on the crown freaks me out.As it is things are not looking very good right now.

No Laxman, no prescription required at all. U get it over the counter at any chemist's shop. But i sometimes feel that i should have consulted my doctor before starting it. I maintain that there are still no side effects experienced by me since i have started taking the pills.

Hi folks, just updating my status.Have completed 100 days on finax.Hair loss is just the same, have stopped counting as it puts me into depression. The crown has started showing more clearly and have started to avoid looking at it in the mirror as it makes me feel miserable. No sides so far which is the only good thing.Planning to hang in there for 12 months so that i have no regrets later

knal,

Hang in there my friend. If the medication is working, it might take 3-6 months for hair loss to slow down/stop. Any cosmetic improvement will be around the 12 month mark.

Combine this with the fact that there sometimes is an initial shed over the first 3 months (a sign of the medication working), it sometimes may appear that your hair loss is worse than it is.

There is no guarantee however, that this medication works for everyone. Have you considered trying to add minoxidil into your regime?

If medication doesn't work for you, hair transplantation may be an option for you in the future depending on your age, level of loss, donor laxity, density, etc.

Best wishes,

Bill

Hi folks. Its nice to be writing after a long gap.I would like to thank Bill for your reply and everyone who has been posting.

Well its been a little more than 6 months on finax.Haven't been taking anything else.I just thought i would share some random thoughts and observations of my experience with fin so far.

The good news is that i am not facing any side effects. The other good news is that i have just got married without anyone noticing my hairloss and there were no problems with the snaps, but my wife has spotted it.One can't hide such things from someone so closeicon_smile.gif

She says its not that serious so thats a huge relief and does not matter much to her.

I feel that i have managed to hold ground after starting fin 6 months ago. After the 6 month mark it seems that i have been losing a lot less than earlier.I used to count at least 100-120 hairs in the drain which has recently come down to 50-70 hairs.Don't know if its the fin or its just seasonal.Secondly less hairs are coming out when i run my fingers through them.i used to manage to pull out around 7 or 8 after running my fingers 10 times, now its down to probably 3.Again, i don't know if its the med or maybe its just a phase where one normally loses less hair.

Whats disturbing me is the nature of my hair lately.Every strand thats coming off seems to be very thin and i am shedding very tiny hair.don't know if there is some sort of minaturisation setting in.I seriously hope thats not the case.I am scared that although it seems that i am losing a lot less i may not get the lost hairs back. The crown is as visible as it was when i last posted and there is no regrowth that i have noticed so far.maybe its still early days for that.I am aware that regrowth may not happen but i will be happy if i retain.

So to sum it all...after 6 months on fin i finally have some positive feelings but i am still not sure if things are working out or its just me in a positive frame of mind.I am certainly going to continue with fin as it at least gives me some hope
